I’m looking for suggestions on a good living book that’s an easier read for a high schooler, something that is enjoyable and engaging, that covers North America. For this year, we are covering a lot of American history, so I’d like to study North America for geography. Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

    Two favorites

Streams to the River, River to the Sea – Scott O’Dell

Of Courage Undaunted – James Daugherty

both are about the Lewis and Clark expedition

One we haven’t read is called Journey to Jericho, by Scott O’Dell. ATTA says “North American geography, West Virginia to California.” Sounds like a good fit.

Thanks for the suggestions TailorMade! We just finished covering the Lewis and Clark expedition. I’ll look into Of Courage Undaunted. And I checked out the one you mentioned “Journey to Jericho” and it’s hard to find a copy of that. Plus, it also looks like it would probably be too easy for my high schooler. But thanks for suggesting it. 🙂

I’m wondering if it might be good to just go ahead and buy Material World and The Hungry Planet since those are the ones used in the new SCM Geography series. I was considering using some of the notebooks in that series when we get to areas that they have notebooks available for.

If you could find Richard Halliburton’s Book of Marvels, I wonder if that would work?  We have it and I plan to have my high schooler read it just because it looks too good to pass up.  I may use it as a read aloud so my younger ones can listen in, but I haven’t decided yet.  Some may think it is too young for your dd but, honestly, I don’t know.

I know it’s available on Amazon frequently and it’s a bit pricey, used, but it may be worth it.  The two you mentioned are great but I don’t know if they would be good to just read, cover to cover, without the notebook.

And, I’m just bumping this for you.

    🙂

You’re welcome. I was looking for easier books based on your post. Those were listed in the 7th-9th grade section.

Halliburton’s is suggestions in the highschool section of ATTA.

Complete book of Marvels is great. It’s appropriate for all ages, but certainly not babyish in anyway. Dd12 is using it now.

TailorMade, I probably should have clarified what I meant by easier read. 🙂 Sorry about that. I’m still looking for something on a high schoolish level; just something that is on the easier end versus challenging. Does that make sense?

My high school daughter enjoys books that are filled with lots of various facts, books in the style of something like Usborne, DK. She actually enjoys some textbooks too. For geography, I think she would really enjoy a book that discusses various things like foods of the region, etc. She also loves to travel. So a really engaging travel-style book would also be something she’d probably enjoy.

For those of you who have Book of Marvels, could you tell me more about it?

I wish they would have something like this of just the united states…… my kids who are still very little but they are loving geography and I have been eyeballing this book for another year in the future. Next year we are doing US history…

They may have something similar to this for US, but I wouldn’t know how to search for that.  Sorry I can’t help.
