  • For all you moms with older children who struggled with spelling AND actually overcame it, what are some suggestions and/or what did you use? There are so many good programs out there, but I am wondering if anyone here has actually had success with anything in particular? I plan to use Spelling Wisdom this year, but wondering if I should add a little extra on alternate days for my older child who is not a natural speller.

Someone once told me to just do a review/mastery flashcards box of frequently used words in English language, and memorize/review them over and over again until it is ingrained. Then also memorize/drill spelling rules that they are having difficulty with. This sounds almost too simple to work. 🙂

I would love to hear your input! Thanks!!

My 19 yo struggled so much with spelling.  What really helped her was studying Latin and using Spelling Wisdom.  Those two together seemed to do the trick for her.

Ds is an atrocious speller.  He’s so very phonetic – basic phonics.  I found All About Spelling and it made a *big difference.  (Maturity did help some, too.)  I want to pick it back up w/ him even though he’s older.  We started when he was in 7th and he’ll be in 10th this fall.

Another option to look at is MegaWords.  I am debating about whether to use these or both.  LOL
