Studying the Passage in Dictation

What exactly does studying the “passage,” require?  Obviously I realize now, that dictation is emphasis on spelling with some on punctuation and capitalization. However, I was thinking that studying meant memorizing the passage, but I see that is incorrect.

So how do I explain to my child what studying the passage means? Or is it just studying the unknown words?
