My 10 year old and 7 year old are both doing the Ancient Greece Study guide this year.  They really are not connecting with The Story of the Greeks, and to to be honest, neither am I.  It feels like not enough, but to much at the same time(if that even makes sense).  They will do narration with it, but do not seem to connect with it.  I see no excitement in their eyes, or even understanding.  They love Our Little Spartan Cousin and Herodotus(those are the only ones we have started so far), but TSOG confuses them.  Maybe a timeline added to the study, or a different spine?

I am not even going to try it with my 1st grader and 4 year old tag along😊 we are going to do the OT readings, and look at an Osborne book and a book called see inside a Greek town that my mother had. I may read some parts from the Greek book but they are young and I am aiming for exposure and grounding in Bible as history so I am not too worried about other deep history yet.

How far into the Story of the Greeks are you?

Have you looked at Our Little Athenian Cousin?

Timelines really help. So do pictures of characters, places, or other pertinent things to the story…artwork, jewelry, etc. Looking it up after reading it can make it all so much more real.

We are currently using the SCM plan for Joshua through Malachi amd Ancient Greece, and are reading The Story of the Greeks. I had to skip over a few chapters for several reasons. My 7 yr old is too young for some of the stories. It tells of greek mythology and one chapter includes the myth of a son that marrying his godess mother. In my home, we just do not even begin to explaing those kinds of things in the elementary years.  However, after skipping to chapter 26 or so, it gets better (so far)  and really begins to tie in with what is happening in Our Little Spartan Cousin. You might try skipping over the first portion of TSOTG. Reading the two at the same time is really working after getting past the beginning of TSOTG.
