Sonya, I really like the new History modules! One question…how did/do you handle state history? Do you just take a year “off” from the module rotation and plug in your state history when you feel like your child is ready? Or do you tackle it when doing American history and where your state’s history falls into that time line? In SC, state history is covered first in 3rd grade and then again in 8th grade (using the same text). I don’t know that I necessarily want to follow this per se (I have two children, two years apart. Currently 1st grade and K4). Any thoughts or suggestions? There is a great book written just a few years ago that details SC history that I am considering for our main text. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Knowledge Quest has a state curriculum.

Either way sounds good, Aimee. You could take a year off the modules to focus on state history or insert it in American History. Or I guess you could do a combination of the two: start American history and when you get to your state in the timeline, take some time to focus on its history. That “some time” could end up being a whole year, or it might be just a few months of concentrated focus. Then you can pick up and move on with American history.

Another idea just came to mind as I was typing: I don’t know how in-depth the book is that you like, but maybe you could interweave your state’s history as you go through American history. You could insert the state events/accounts as they occur in the big picture. So you would be kind of doing American history with a SC emphasis all through the timeline. Does that make sense?

I’m curious what book you found! I have Notgrass’s history for Georgia, and their field trip book is great; but they don’t have SC that I know of.

Thanks for the suggestions! I think we will take an entire year to focus on state history . We are blessed with many historical sites and battlefields, so I may interweave it all(US and State) together and take a couple of years! The book I am considering for my reference is “South Carolina: A History” by Walter Edgar. Fortunately, my parents have this book, so I don’t have to purchase it myself. I am sure I will supplement with many others as SC history is rich and deep and many people love to tell her story in various ways. We are in the Greenville area, whose history is also very interesting. We have a new history museum, so I am sure we will be frequent visitors. Also, since the state’s geography is so varied, we can incorporate it as well. We may just have a SC year (or two)! I am very thankful to be a native and to have visited many parts of our beautiful state. I can’t wait to share it with our children!

Sorry for not including the link to the book. I am HTML illiterate and have no idea how to do that!

    Hi Sonya,

We have Exploring TN by the Notgrass family and I was curious if you just used the field trip book for GA or if you covered the state history the way the curriculum is set up. I think it looks great, but I’m not sure when to cover this. We have a 7, 10 and 17 year old (who had state history when she attended a local private school). Any recommendations?

    Thanks!

We mostly used just the field trip book, but you could easily insert some of the stories from Part II as they fit in your regular history studies or take one term to go through those stories and focus on Georgia history. Either way I’d probably wait until we’re studying at least the mid-1700s before diving in.

    Just some ideas . . . 🙂
