Looking to start the CM education for my 12 yr old. Been homeschooling for 2 years, with an eclectic method, but very interested in starting with the CM philosophy. Would like to know we can be prepared for state testing (i.e. SAT/ACT etc.) for grades 7 and up, if I start with the CM education for my 12 year old next year.

I’ve been reading a lot about getting started with CM on your site as well as a myriad of other sites. I even purchased the book “For The Children’s Sake” by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay.

Just not exactly sure what the “big picture” is for implementing a CM education AND preparing for/meeting the requirements for tests that we have in our TN state.

    Any guidance would be appreciated.

Kim, I can chime in a little. My oldest is currently preparing to take the ACT and has been homeschooled from the beginning, with mainly CM methods. We grabbed an ACT prep book and the first thing it has you do is take an actual ACT test, then goes over why each answer is correct or incorrect. Then it will teach testing skills. She’s done the English portion so far (math will be next) and with zero test prep scored around the 60th percentile (50th is what the average high school graduate would score on the test right out of high school). Not bad for a 10th grader. She does want to improve her score and part of that will just be learning about how to take this particular test (which the book will cover) and part of that will be doing 2 more years of school (11th and 12th grade).

Wow..60th percentile! That is awesome. Congrats to your daughter. Thanks for letting me know. I did think of getting a test prep book at a bookstore or online. Is there any that you would recommend, or steer clear of?

Also, on a side note…I’ve been reading a bit on this forum and it seems that the recurring theme is…”get a good grasp of the CM philosophy, read her books, integrate the method slowly, keep it simple & be consistent”.

I’m trying hard not to worry too much about testing, but there’s always that nagging thought in the back of my mind “what if my child doesn’t pass the tests, or what if she has gaps in her learning, what about high-school and college, etc.”

As I read more on this forum, site and blog, I start to realize that it will all fall into place eventually.

I also have this feeling that when I start to implement the CM method next year, I will definitely need some support along the way, and that’s why I am SO happy that I found this site and forum.

Thanks for giving me another perspective,

    Kim

For what test prep book to choose – we went with the one created and promoted by the ACT test itself because it will cover what the current test is like. I ordered it on Amazon. I imagine they have similar for the SAT.

Everyone has gaps in their learning, truly. Public schools rarely if ever complete the entire textbook for each subject every year. I can’t remember a single textbook we finished during my own school years. The thing I remind myself is that if my children know how to learn what they want or need to know, they can learn anything if they need to.

    Welcome to the group!
