  • I wondered if anyone out there has done dictionary work with the words that they miss or words in the sentences that they don’t know the meaning of in their spelling dictation exercises?  I remember in Student of the Word and somewhere else, they get homonymns, antonyms, etc., meaning of the word, separate syllables, etc.I use to have a form that had this.

    Thanks

If they don’t know the meaning of a word, then I would have the child look it up and write it in their own vocabulary listing notebook.  However, I do ask my own girls to try and figure out what the word means from the context in the sentence.  I think this is just as valuable since there are times when you won’t have a dictionary handy – or someone who can tell you what it means.  Then, they can check the dictionary, add the word and it’s meaning to their notebook, and see if they had the general idea. As far as homonyms go, I have talked terms with my girls, and they have spent some time for a few days after working with the terms finding words.  So for homonyms my girls have to, two, and too written down with a sentence using the words correctly.  You can make up a section of their notebooks with different headings for these so they have a specific place to keep a record of them.  Does that make sense? I think I will be doing this with my youngest this year.  The older ones have not used as detailed an area, but they did make lists as mentioned above, for some days after covering them, as mentioned above.
