I need a little help with figuring out Spelling Wisdom for my dd10 who just finished 4th grade.  She is not a strong speller, we didn’t start the book right away in the beginning of the year, and I have been VERY inconsistent, therefore we have not come very far in the book this year.

I am looking to next year and realizing that even if we do 2 lessons a week, we will only get through about lesson 90 in book 1 by the time she finishes 5th grade.  The SCM suggestion is that book 2 is started around 5th grade or so, but at the rate we’re going, she’s going to be in book 1 well into 6th grade.

I hesitate to ask, “is that okay?” because I know that as homeschoolers, yes it is okay because we go at the rates and needs of our children.  But yet I will ask it anyway because I don’t want to “miss out” on the other books or the things she needs.  Does that make sense?  So – is that okay?  How could we “catch up”?

Well, as Sonya would say, “Teach the child, not the curriculum.”  Wink  Just go at her level.  If you push her through it, she’ll only get frustrated.  If it looks like she’s ready, you could always bump it up to more lessons a week later, but go at her level.

My 20yos wasn’t a strong speller (an understatement) but we just plugged along and read a lot.  Now he’s a very good speller.  I think their learning builds upon itself and, even if they haven’t learned words specifically, they are able to spell them because of seeing it in other places.  If not, there’s always a dictionary (or spell check!)

Dont’ fret, my boys take after me a BAD speller.  My son going into 7th grade is still on book 1 and only on lesson 50 or so.  He just can’t seem to remember no matter what I do.  So we’re just plugging along!

Thank you both for your responses.  It’s always good to be reassured by others who have gone before!Smile
