I just ordered the Spelling Wisdom for my kids and so excited to use!  I have one son (4th grade) who is not a good speller at all:( We have worked a lot of visualizing and he has a great memory when it comes to art and drawing from memory! I am hoping a little more time with him this year going through these lessons and he being a little older will help BUT I was also wondering if there is a list or guide of rules for spelling that might fit right along with these lessons. These wouldn’t be for me to drill him and for him to memorize but more for me to know ahead of time and be able to communicate to him. Thanks so much for your help!

    Kindly,

I use The Writing Road to Reading as a spelling/phonics reference.  I’m not sure if it’s what you are looking for or not…it’s as big as a phone book!  The ABCs and All Their Tricks is another good reference book.

We’ll also be using a free Spelling Journal from Barefoot Meandering.  I plan on having them write any words they are studying in the journal.

Any spelling program that teaches spelling rules will have a list…you can google and see if it’s available on their website or if someone has turned it into flashcards on Quizlet. I did this and combined rules from a few different places (because some had a couple different ones or I preferred a certain wording of a rule) and made my own set of flashcards on Quizlet. My 4th grader is learning them this summer to hopefully help improve her spelling…I didn’t think Spelling Wisdom helped her much last year.
