My dd is starting 9th grade this year, and I’ve been debating with myself over what to do about spelling for her. A few recent high school grads (from ps) I’ve talked to mentioned that they didn’t even have specific spelling instruction in their English classes after middle school. However, my dd feels she could still use some spelling work. She doesn’t often misspell things, but often asks me how to spell a word if she’s unsure of herself. We’ve agreed upon her first asking me, “Is ________ spelled…..” and then I correct her if she’s wrong.

My question is about what to use with her this year. We did prepared dictation over the last two years, which she really did not care for. We used one of the Spelling Wisdom books this year for dictation. However, she tells me she prefers to have a spelling list to work with. What do any of you use for spelling at the high school level?

Sue, I would suggest Mega-Words or Spell Well as options. I’ve not used either, but both could be a good fit for that age, I think. ~ Christie

We used My Father’s World before we started SCM this past school year. They recommend Spelling Power and that has been a good fit for my children. My daughter is going into 9th grade and we’ll finish the book this year and my 7th grade son will also finish this year. We too tried prepared dictation last year and ended up going back to Spelling Power because the kids liked it better. Just another option. It has worked well for us, but obviously there are many spelling programs out there.

From the looks of it, SpellWell only goes through grade 5, or am I looking at the wrong thing? I read a couple of descriptions and reviews of Mega Words but haven’t found any samples, so I’m not really sure what it’s like.

I do like what I’ve read about Spelling Power, but again, no samples to look at. I like the idea of pre-testing and then just studying the incorrect words until mastered.

Melissa, I was wondering if you could tell me how often your daughter did spelling each week. Also, do you have the cd-rom and dvd with yours and have you used them often? I have seen a couple of copies selling used online, but some of them do not include the dvd or cd and thus are less expensive. Also, did you purchase and use the activity cards, or did you just use the activities that it says are provided in the teacher’s guide?

    Thanks,

    Sue

We started All About Spelling 2 years ago and I will just continue with that till done.  My oldest is in 8th grade.   Because we switched my now 3rd grader will be done years before my 1st born just because of when I found the spelling program and at what age i started it.

I think you just need to keep doing what works for her to continue developing her spelling.  I am a terrible speller (ever really looked at my postsEmbarassed) so my kids will continue until I feel they have way surpased me!  I think it’s something that was highly overlooked in my school days and I hate that I still have to ask my dh how to spell words.
