I thought I had posted this question but cant seem to find it anywhere.
I was wondering if you have an ETA on a handbook for History Module 1 like you have for Module 2? We will be doing Mod 1 next “school year” and I know that this will be an invaluable resource!!!!
Hmmm, . . . good question. We have the science handbook (106 Days of Creation Studies) for that module, but I didn’t think about making a history one since it involves just one book. What age(s) will your children be? We could just talk through some possibilities here if you’d like.
I will have 13, 10, 8, & 6 that I will be teaching. You were such a help with Module 6 I was hoping to buy something in hopes of reimbursing you in some way for blessing my family.
The literature part I can easily figure out. I have ACG 1 and will need to figure out how to space it out over a year. But there is nothing listed for older children. I would assume this is because they would have been through Module 1 already. We have not and he doesn’t have a vast knowledge of geography. But, ACG will most likely still be good for his age also. It is written so very well.
As for history. I am hoping to add some books to this list. I have CHOW and SOM but would like to add in some other reading. Any recommendations?
Sorry for the delay in posting a response, hinrichsquiver. Life got quite busy the past couple of weeks. I’m hoping we will settle back in to a sane routine now 😉
RE ACG 1: I like to recommend that the older children teach the material to the younger children (with mom’s help, of course, to keep on track, gather supplies, and make suggestions). I realize that it might not work in every situation, but having the older child at least help with the study will make sure he is reviewing/learning it too.
I’ve been trying to think of additional books to recommend (besides the ones listed in the other modules), and the only thing coming to mind would be possibly a worldview study that would help him interpret the world history events from a Biblical perspective. For example, I’m planning to go through the How Should We Then Live? DVDs with my oldest this year as we finish up Module 6 through present day. Another possibility would be the Uncle Eric books on economics, justice, etc. Those are based on a broad history scope.
Now just to make things interesting I’ll throw in this little tidbit: I’m seriously pondering some changes to the Curriculum Guide which would eliminate that one year of history overview in favor of just starting in to the chronology. All the books I can think of adding to the CHOW and SOM are the ones listed in the following modules anyway, you know? I’m thinking about deleting the present module 1 and breaking module 6 up into two years. Any thoughts on that idea?
<giggle> Sonya, I already made that adjustment myself when I planned my “long-term” plan. So yes, I’d be in favor of it! I just couldn’t wrap my head around all that was covered in year 6 in one year, and scrambled to find enough to fill up the first three years and found it was easy to restructure it all into two.
I totally agree that Module 6 has a bit too much history. I am such a person that to make adjustments to a schedule just overwhelms me and makes it harder for me. I really wish I could overcome this weakness. I would also like to see more books in the earlier modules. There just doesn’t seem to be enough historical reading. Not that I expect you to do all the work and find all the readings. There are other products that can help those of us that want to add more readings.
I also would much rather just do history chronologically and get in depth with it rather than doing a brief overview.
I look forward to seeing what changes you make. Good thing we dont plan on starting our next year till July. Also please let us know if we can help in any way.
I think it looks great. I look forward to seeing it. It will defintely make studying Module 6 much more manageable. Even though I think we can always find more things that we want to add in and take more time than what we allot. Thankfully that is a beauty of homeschooling.
I am really excited about your history rotation!!!!! I just wanted to say THANK YOU! We will start a chronological cycle in the summer or fall (if not the spring….I’m excited to get going and I think dd is ready). I mentioned in my intro that I am not strong in history and want to integrate all history as we learn, and your schedule is a blessing. I’ll eagerly await the results of your fiddling 🙂 as I pour over the lists you have in place now. We may read CHOW before we officially start and then jump in on Module 2 with the guide you have published. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I guess I should just plan on going into Module 2 (as it is called now) come next year? I am due with a baby in about 5 weeks and plan on taking that time to plan for the next year. Lots to order also so want to make sure I am ready for that time.
Yes, I’d recommend you “go directly to Module 2; do not pass Go . . .” (Sorry, I’m battling a cold this morning and it must have settled in my brain 🙂 ) I’m hoping to post the newly shuffled Modules in the next couple of weeks, but the old ones will still be posted for those who want to refer to them too.
Give me a holler if you have any questions as you plan. (And now . . . back to my tissue box.)
