Hi! Have a question about social studies. We just moved to Maryland and in this state you have to have a seperate class of social studies. I know I can pull a lot of things out of the geography/history books, but I don’t think it will be enough to satisfy the social studies requirement for elementary. Does anyone know of a book or supplement I could use with more “social studies” activities? It is very frustrating to have to teach a “fluff” class, but I must do it to meet requirements. Thanks.

I am over in Carroll County.  I know for Social Studies, what we counted was anything that was History or Geography related.  What ages/grades are your kids?

We’re in MD too, Washington County, and I have always counted Social Studies as History & Geography.  Never had any problems because as I recall growing up, Social Studies in the public schools is really just history, geography, we did state studies (I think in 4th grade-but haven’t even done that w/my kids yet), and touched on government (public school style) in high school.

Cheryl, I know for us, once our eldest hit 16, we no longer went through the school board any more.  We had the option to still do reviews for him if we wanted, which we didn’t, so we just opted out of that.  You will still need transcripts for the high schoolers, but we didn’t do reviews.

I think that you should be fine with the younger ones.  As they get older, ours tended to produce more written work to take in to reviews, anyways.  I always kept a book log of everything that they had read.

Thanks Meagan for the update on how you homeschool in MD. I am still trying to work it all out, as it is much different then our last state we homeschooled in.
