Last week, my ddddddh gave me a kindle for our 10th anniversary. I’ve been finding some great books online to put on it and would love to hear what others have been reading for themselves or as read-alouds.
Letters of a Woman Homesteader from Amazon (a humorous and interesting account of a single woman homesteading a claim in Wyoming in the early 1900s)
The Darjeeling Disaster from Archive.org (a missionary family in India lost, to this life, six of their seven children, it is the story of their family life and how the parents dealt with this)
The Bible in Spain from Manybooks.com (a missionary effort in the mid-1800s–I’ve just gotten through the preface and first chapter, but just the preface about Spanish culture was worth it!)
The Railway Children from Gutenburg (a children’s story we were reading aloud, but had to be returned to the library)
Wind in the Willows from Gutenburg (a children’s story for our next naptime readaloud)
A Circuit Rider’s Wife from Archive.org (an interesting and often amusing, though thought-provoking, autobio of this woman’s married life)
I’ve also been going through the bio genre on ManyBooks and seen a lot of interesting histories of early American life that I’ve downloaded, but haven’t had the chance to read yet.
I’m loving this kindle!!!
So, what have you been reading?
DesParticipantI’m so jealous I don’t have an e-reader yet!!! I sit around and think of all the books i’m going to download and read when I get one.
Cindie2ddsMemberWell, I just got an iPad and we’ve been reading Pooh and the original Brer Rabbit. I’ve been perusing the PDF samples of the Module guides trying to decide where to start. :0)
Seriously, though, I’ve downloaded as many classics as I could for free in iBooks and am currently going through The Count of Monte Cristo.
suzukimomParticipantWow, I have lots. Unfortunately, I don’t always know where I got them from….

Cindie2ddsMemberI completely forgot about putting MEP on there! Of course! Thank you.
krommamaMemberI also got a kindle recently – an early Christmas present from hubby. I’ve been reading Pride and Prejudice.
JMNapierParticipantDes, I don’t have an e-reader, but you can download the kindle reader to your computer or droid phone.
joyinktmMemberThanks for the long list, suzukimom. There were some new-to-me titles on there!
NinaParticipantYou guys make me jealous 🙁 I want a Kindle soooo bad!!!!!
suzukimomParticipantOne thing I did, other than searching for specific titles…
When in Project Gutenberg, when I have a book I like… At the bottom it says “Readers Also Downloaded”. Often I’ll find books that look interesting there too. (I will often check out books at a few locations, as sometimes one place has better formatting, etc…)
Also, Gutenberg has “Bookshelves” available from the main search page… so I might look at “Children’s Picture Books” to see what they have.
hth!
joyinktmMemberHey, suzukimom, thanks for the Gutenberg tips. I have not noticed that “readers also downloaded” option and am going to check that out. I love looking at the ones on Amazon and have found some good books through there.
I’ve been enjoying Manybooks because it seems a little more user-friendly than Gutenburg. They have books listed by genre, but I haven’t looked at Gutenberg’s bookshelves in a long time and will check that out, too.
Thanks!
