My special needs ds has been very, very, VERY hard on one particular chair in our home, and I need to make a slipcover for it a.s.a.p. I don’t want any decorator fabrics or anything expensive–I want durable and washable. I’m thinking perhaps a denim fabric might be a good idea. I have to make sure it’s something not too easy to poke a hole in, or he’ll be picking at it again when I’m not looking.
Any ideas? There is one seat cushion that has a wider part along the front, then the chair back, arms, and bottom to cover. I’m going to have to figure it out as I go along….
Thanks,
Sue
Doug SmithKeymasterIt may not be the most attractive fabric but there’s probably nothing more durable than a canvas tarp.
SueParticipantYou’re absolutely right (*sigh*), and it’s funny because I just talked to a friend who told me that is exactly why she has an old, beat-up, but solid table in her dining room–so she doesn’t have to worry about what homeschooling 6 kids will do to the furniture. Her husband has promised her a beautiful, new dining room set when the youngest graduates.
*Sigh* I still long for the pretty, well-decorated living room my empty-nest sister now has…..I’m just not willing to throw away these years to get there!
botanicalbeckyMemberI made a slipcover for a couch once out of denim – though a lighterweight denim. It looked pretty awesome actually. Honestly, depending on price per yard denim vs. canvas, whichever you choose could look nice – its all in the details. I made separate cushion covers (with zippers/buttons so I could wash easily) and used the cording stuff around them so it looked more fitted and nice instead of the loose and rumply way they can get to looking. Have fun! 🙂
