I’m pleased to announce that our new hymn study resource Singing the Great Hymns is now available! It collects all 72 hymns we recommend on our free curriculum guide for 12 years of school into a single book with lyrics, sheet music, and an audio track of the tune.

That is really a great resource – thank you!  One question, it’s only the music and not anyone singing on the audio or is there with and without singing?

The audio tracks are just the tune without any singing. It’s designed to be used as an accompaniment track to sing along with.

That is what I thought, but wanted to make sure.  Thanks! 🙂

This looks like a fantastic resource, Jordon! I was hoping you guys would create something like this to make it easy to teach. I like how you said just once or twice a week. We did hymn study a few years ago…every single day. We enjoyed it, but I got tired of it so often. Less is better. Are any biographical information included on the hymn writers? Are we able to print as many books as we need for our family with pdf?

We wanted to make the focus on the hymns themselves, but you can certainly add a biography of the hymn writer if you like. I haven’t yet found a hymn stories book that I really like, so I unfortunately don’t have a recommendation right now. But I’m keeping my eyes open for one to recommend.

Are we able to print as many books as we need for our family with pdf?

Absolutely. Just like with any of our books, you can make copies of either the PDF or the printed book for the members of your immediate household.

Any recommendations on how often to review previously-learned hymns?

We have liked “Then Sings my Soul” series by Robert J Morgan.  They aren’t perfect, but they do the trick!  This new book looks amazing!

Any recommendations on how often to review previously-learned hymns?  Every other week?  Once a month?  Once a term?

My thoughts are to try to review once a term. It could look something like this:

    Term 1

    • 6 weeks: learn hymn A
    • 5 weeks: learn hymn B
    • 1 week: review hymns A & B

    Term 2

    • 5 weeks: learn hymn C
    • 1 week: review hymns C & A
    • 4 weeks: learn hymn D
    • 1 week: learn hymn D &  review B
    • 1 week: review hymns D & C

    Term 3

    • 4 weeks: learn hymn E
    • 1 week: learn hymn E & review B
    • 1 week: review hymns E & D
    • 3 weeks: learn hymn F
    • 1 week: learn hymn F & review A
    • 1 week: learn hymn F & review C
    • 1 week: review hymns F & E

Also playing a recording of the hymns at leisure in the background on the weekends or evenings can be good for review.
