Should I track what books we/DD reads?

I read some horrible story a few months back about a mama being requested to show a list of every single book her child had read from kindergarten to part of high school, including publisher and date published, her kiddo was being enrolled into p.s.  So naturally this makes me question if I need to be keeping track of the things that are read.

I was considering getting a spiral notebook and keep track of each book. Should this be in some type of order, just listed as read, in different categories etc? Or am I just wasting my free thinking time on this 🙂

I just keep the books we read in a simple Excel spreadsheet, adding a sheet for each new school year.  Here in NH we are required to keep a book list.

Last year I slacked off at the end.  It’s always so much easier if I remember to add the book to the spreadsheet the first week we start it.

(I rarely add picture books unless they are related to a subject we are studying).

We keep a log of books read for our homeschool portfolio. I try to stop and write them in my planner as we go along but I sometimes get behind and have to play catch up. At the end of each year, I use my notes in my planner to type up a more official looking list for the portfolios.

I have a list of school related books we read. I create an xcel spreadsheet at the beginning of the year with each students “overview” for the year, it includes all the books we read for history, independent literature, and family read alouds.

I do not log the just for fun reading books though.

I like having a list because that way as the younger kids grow up I can see what we read when and it helps me remember what I want to read again. DD likes to know what is on her schedule for the year so she does not read “school reading” for “fun reading”

I’ve kept a list on a spreadsheet since my oldest was 5!  The last two years, I didn’t do so great at keepingg close track, but I at least have down the books I read aloud for school and the audio books we listened to. These are the books we read/listened to as a family.

I also make each of my girls keep a list of all the books they read during the school year (fun and school reading). Some do a better job than others, but the state requires it, so I figure it’s something on paper, anyway.

I like the idea of the spreadsheet! I never even thought of using the computer, likely since I am only tech savvy enough to get on the internet and look things up 🙂 I would not be able to misplace it as easily as a notebook. Our state requires us to just teach what is comparable to p.s. So math, reading, writing, geography and so on but they do not require any type of records kept or anything at all, but I would rather keep track to help us remember and for the just in case.
