    Hi Everyone!

I have three kids – in the fall they’ll be in 4th, K, and pre-K. I’d like to do group history read alouds with independent readers for my older, and out loud readers for my younger two. I really like Sonlight and that can i easily modify it to fit in with our secular needs. But, I don’t like that i can’t really have all three together for read alouds. I would LOVE to do the SCM history modules, but i absolutely have to do something secular.

Is there a secular history that is like the modules available here? Anyone have a good subsititute?

We’ve used Story of the World up to Vol 3, but are looking for more literature based curriculum – i supposed i can just find books from the activity guide, but I guess I’m looking for more than that since I’ve tried that before and it’s never quite worked out right… we’ve always ended up just rushing through listening to or reading the last half of the volumes and not doing any extras with literature. I like that it’s so incorporated with Sonlight that we can’t skimp on it. I don’t have even a half decent history background, so I also think I need the guide to help me interpret and expand upon what she’s read.

Any and all help is most appreciated!!!

    Thanks!!

Could you possibly follow SCM’s modules, but use a different spine than the Bible?  Maybe A Child’s History of the World or A Little History of the World?  Or, even SOTW?  Did you use the Activity Guide WITH SOTW?  It seems as though the Activity Guide would help pace you and have you do the hands on and integrate it with literature.  It also suggests MANY living books to go along with each chapter.  The only difference would be that it is 4 modules intstead of 6.   In addition to read-aloud books, it suggests independent readers that your older child could read.  You may want to give SOTW another try, starting at level 1 and using the Activity Guide to it’s full capactiy.  Otherwise, I don’t know.  If you could find a way to use SCM’s guides and just modify them to meet your needs … as I said, use a spine other than the Bible.  You could look at Penny Gardener’s site as well for suggestions of books to go along with the period you are studying.  She even has a secular CM guide.  I haven’t read it, but maybe it would help.  One more thing, are you a member of the SecularCM Yahoo group?  They are a WEALTH of information!  I would definitely join that if you haven’t already.

    Good luck on your journey!

    Melissa,

Thanks so much for the advice and the info on the yahoo group! Joining it now. 🙂

Doing SOTW more seriously may be the best option, I agree, but i”ll check out Penny’s site – hadn’t head of it before.

    Thanks!

May I also suggest All Through the Ages by Christine Miller as a resource to have for studying history, geography, art, music and science with books. Although it is from a Christian Classical source/author, the book suggestions are not all Christian and it will last you until 12 grade. It’s worth the money!
