I am pretty new to SCM, but not to homeschooling (finishing up our third year). Next year, I will have a fourth grader and a second grader. I pretty well set as far as what I’m doing with my fourth grader next year, but I’m not completely sure about my youngest. I noticed that the SCM second grade lesson plans schedule only copywork and reading practice along with narration for language arts? No writing instruction or spelling yet? My son is on the Autism Spectrum and this year we’ve been using Memoria Press’ special needs curriculum for writing and reading, but I feel like they introduce grammar concepts too soon, and my concrete thinker doesn’t really understand. I guess I’m just looking at the SCM plans wondering if that is really all there is to LA for second grade? Just reading, copywork, and narration? I am familiar with some of Charlotte Mason’s writings, but I guess I just want to make sure I’m not missing something. Do any of you add more or supplement your CM language arts for second grade? I do have two levels of ELTL and I could always have him start that next year, but I really like the look of SCM’s materials and lesson plans. Thanks in advance for your thoughts and advice!

Language arts for second grade in a Charlotte Mason education is reading, copywork, and oral narrations. Formal spelling (prepared dictation) and English usage/grammar do not begin until the child is about 9 or 10 years old.

Our  The Natural Progression of Language Arts video in our Learning Library gives an overview of language arts for grades 1-12.
