I’m sure this is a silly question and I am that mom, but…

We have been working on family scripture memory for a few months with DS4 and DD5 and they have many verses memorized (approx 20).  However, I have to provide the first couple/few words (more if they are similar to another verse) to get them started.  We always recite reference-scripture-reference, but they never seem to remember the reference.  We use the SCM Memory Box method.  How can we move towards reciting the scripture from just the reference, or am I expecting way too much for their ages?

For our family, for almost all verses we need a prompt of the beginning line. Plus once they learned to read I show it and we simply read them aloud together. For many verses, esp. prior to reading skills came in,, we made up motions and used the bit of sign language we knew to help it stick, or a song. However, we did not begin memory work until about age 6. My boys are now 10 and 12 and have a good many verses truly hidden in their hearts thru SCMs gentle method.

I’d say if you do any at all, do motions and songs, keep it light and fun, they are quite young yet.

We read a lot, and really enjoyed Leading Little Ones to God, and are still enjoying Vos’ Story Bible.

    Hope that helps:)

They actually started memorizing  in competition with each other, but I went with it since I’m an overachiever. My DS will have it memorized by day 1, but I try hard to make him actually “hide it in his heart” instead of just parrot the words. I started the memory box just recently for review, but maybe that is too formal for their ages and I should get rid of that. I usually try to do too much too soon and need someone to tell me to relax and let it happen. So thank you for the reminder and recommendations!

My DC struggle with the scripture references.  I always say the reference then they join in for the verse (usually after the first word or two).  Then we say the reference together.

My younger ones love joining in, well before age 6.  As long as they are initiating it, I don’t think it’s an issue.  My 3 yo usually loves working on his own verses and short prayers.  On days he just wants to play, I don’t push it.

I use the Scripture Memory system with my older half of kids and they almost always need the first couple of words after the address and then they chime in just fine. They are 15, 12 and 10.
