Hi there,
I’m thinking of using the Middle Ages handbook with my 2nd grader next year. We are coming from HOD (which I still love,) but he needs a few more to develop before we use the Preparing Hearts guide. I really love SCM too, so I’m excited to try putting together a CM year with SCM and maybe a few books choices from Ambleside as well. Do you have any tips about this particular guide? Have you done it with a 2nd grader? Did it work for your family? Thank you for any help you might be able to offer 🙂
TailorMadeParticipantWe are finishing this guide (hopefully by the beginning of summer) and have enjoyed it! This year, I’m down to three kids to Homeschool. They are 17, 13, and 6. One fun thing that we’ve done is to coordinate movies after studying certain sections of time/historical characters. I used Beth Holland’s book, Learning with the Movies, to create lists for each term. Some were checked out from our local library. Others had to be inter-library loaned. Didn’t find one, or two as they were very old and ILL didn’t have the item(s) in the system.
I didn’t use every title for family read alouds, or for each grade level suggestion. I used what we have in our own library, the public library, and a few ordered when $ allowed. It’s been plenty!
Though your 2nd grader may be a bit young for it, I used IEW’s theme based writing lessons that fit with this time for my 12(now 13)yo It’s been great. He only has two assignments to finish.
Hth,

saltvearthParticipantThank you 🙂 I think we will do IEW’s writing in the future, but he won’t be ready for it yet. That one is perfect for this time period though. I had never heard of the Holland book. I’ll have to look into that! Good to know you’ve enjoyed it. I look forward to what I’ll learn in this period as well. I don’t remember learning much about the middle ages in school.
Sonya ShaferModeratorFor a 2nd grader, I would probably skip the Famous Men books. You might read a sample and see whether it would be a good fit for your family.
marmiemamaParticipantBecca, thanks so much for the suggestion for the Learning with the Movies book! We LOVE family movies, so my kids will just love this book!
saltvearthParticipantThank you Sonya 🙂 I was wondering how the Famous Men book would work for him. I appreciate your taking the time to answer. I will take a look at it anyway, but do you or anyone else have another spine suggestion? Maybe A Child’s History of the World starting with about chapter 40-ish? Or is there another option I’m not thinking of. I have the Yesterday’s Classics library on my kindle. Would any of those work?
sherazParticipantI am not sure which YC to use as a spine yet for Middle Ages, but here is a link to the Heritage History Middle Ages book list. You can read it over, and if you find one that you like, you can purchase that book for $1.99. Once you have the download you can load it to your Kindle or print it out and bind it.

The Story of Europe by H. E. Marshall and Awakening of Europe and Discovery of New Worlds by M.B. Synge look good.
Here is a link to all their libraries (studies). There might be another area that you’d like to include in your study:
