Has anyone here used the SCM Handicrafts Crochet set? I have always wanted to learn how to crochet and I am considering purchasing it. I would really like to hear any and all feedback. Here are a few of my questions about this specific program… Is it good for an adult? Is it easy to understand and follow for someone who has never done crochet before? I really like SCM and would love to support them by purchasing this program, but I also want to make sure that I am spending my money wisely.

    Thanks, Tammy

It’s a great question, Tammy. And I’m eager for others to answer. I just wanted to mention that the camera operator, an adult, learned how to crochet from filming the video. Smile

I have the DVD and all three of us ladies in the house are going to try and learn from it – I have not had time yet but I think it is great from what I have seen. I will let you know……

We have it, and haven’t gotten very far into the DVD, but I would say it would be money wisely spent.

It is VERY easy to understand, and follow.  My 6 year old daughter is learning from it with minimal help.

Thank you for the responses. I purchased the hooks and yarn today at our local craft store. So… I am committed to doing this now. I have also decided to go ahead and order the DVD set. I will let everyone know how it goes once I receive the DVD and begin. Thanks, Tammy

Good luck Tammy, hopefully we will all learn with Sonya’s talented daughters help….Linda

We are getting started with our dvd and chains.  I prefer a natural fiber.  Would we be able to use cotton yarn for all of the projects, especially the baby blanket?  If so, what size of crochet hook should we use?  If not, why?  We are excited to make these projects.  Do you have an estimate of how many working hours the baby banket will take?

We have found another DVD helpful as well.  It has flowers we plan to put on the hat and it has granny squares we plan to make after our baby blanket.  It is called The Art of Crochet 4 Kids.  I like both this DVD and the SCM DVD to learn from, as it is so very new to me and my kids and they each have different projects and information to offer.

As a beginner you would want to find a wool yarn to work with.  Cotton yarn is usually harder to work with than wool yarn.  Wool has a bit of stretch to it and is very forgiving.  Cotton has no stretch, so it is harder to form uniform stitches.

You could buy the polyester yarn found at most stores.  It doesn’t feel as nice as wool but your finished product would be machine washable.

My 9 year old daughter just began learning crochet and we just purchased the DVD. We have seen the first three lessons and they are great. Not to fast, not to slow and the camerawoman did a great job in showing things up close ;). I am excited to learn along with my daughter.
