I am wanting to blend the history and literature of both together. The literature is pretty easy as it is just assigning books to the person I want to read it. I am curious if there are others who combined history, and if so how did you find the best way to do so?

What we did was use the basic SCM framework, and just “migrate” over the AO books we wanted.  It worked well for us.

We are doing something similar to what Bookworm did.  My kids are on the same history cycle, and I read aloud one ‘spine’ with both of them.  Then I assign an appropriate level and number of books to each to read and narrate individually.  I pull from both the SCM lists and the AO lists.  My DD9 is an exceptionally fast reader, so she can handle quite a few books.  DD7 reads well, but not as fast, so I have to pick and choose more carefully for him.

You could also do it the other way, keeping each child on a history cycle based on which AO year suits them best, but then switch out books if there are choices from SCM’s suggestions that you feel are better.

Either way, you would need to be careful not to overload the students with too many books, in an attempt to combine the two programs.

I actually want to keep them on the same history cycle, and use the SCM cycle and books, because it is so much easier than having them on many different places. I am going to pull books from the other source as y’all described.
