This is the first year homeschooling our children.  My two younger boys, 10 and 9, are using the Jeannie Fulbright book on Astronomy and absolutely LOVING it (as am I).

The problem is our 14 year old.  We started him out with Apologia’s Exploring General Science.  He was pulled out last year at the end of 7th grade (he started Kindergarten a year late), and because of several moves in the last two years he got a little behind.  Anyways, I don’t think he’s learning ANYTHING with this book, and I don’t know what to do.  When we ask him to talk about what he’s learned so far, he gives us NOTHING.  His first test was not very good.  I would love to switch him to something else (Christian based) but I don’t even know where to begin.  I would love to hear your input as to what has worked/ not worked for you all, or if it’s just too early to tell if the Apologia is not working for us.

    Thanks!!

You may want to take a look at Answers in Genesis’ science curriculum. My 7th grader was technically ready for the Apologia, but I did not think he could take the rigors of that particular course just yet. He is very much enjoying what he is doing. I know your son is older, but it may be worth a glimpse.

    Blessings,

As I recall , when we did that course, the first module was a bear.  All those names of scientists!  Am I thinking of the right course?  I remember it was better after that module.  I remember doing the first couple modules with my ds to help him get used to more textbook style reading.

You may want to try Module 2  and take it step by step.  Maybe from bold heading to bold heading, then narrate, then move to the next section.  Or have him write some keywords after each heading and use that as his guide for narration.  Just some ideas if you do decide to keep going.

Or skip the General Science book altogether and move on to the Physical Science book. The General Science book is the least interesting, mostly because it covers very basic science. Your son may already have had most, if not all, the material covered in the book. My kids didn’t like the General Science book very well because we had already covered most of the material informally in the elementary years. They liked the Physical Science book better.

My oldest, who is 18, did not do well with Apologia.  She struggled through Gen. Science. Physical Science, and 2/3 of Biology.  In March of her sophomore year, I pulled her out of Apologia and moved her into Landmark Freedom Baptist Curriculum (http://www.landmarklfbc.com/ ).  From what we could tell, it covered the same information but was not as wordy as Apologia.  It was straight forward and to the point.  We added in some living books and science experiments (disection from Bob Jones).  It made a huge difference.  What had been an agonizing subject before became fascinating to her.  I wish I would not have gotten stuck in the “Apologia trap”.  Over the years, I’ve come across many people who don’t do well with Apologia.  If something isn’t working, through it out and don’t be afraid to untwaddle (My thoughts are:  If it’s not working its twaddle – a waste of time – killing the love of learning).

I used to have a link to a site that had living science books for high school students.  I can’t find it but maybe you could google it.

My dd finished out high school science with LFBC and loved it.  She’s been accepted into several schools and her test scores were good.
