I have a son (6.5) very keen on science so I wanted to consider some options for next year. I am looking for something gentle yet fun and can answer some of his 1,000,000 questions! I have 106 days of creation lined up but I keep re-considering. I’m not sure why.

So, pros and cons of your chosen science for younger years…specifically Noeo or AIG. If you have additional insight for 106 DOC please share that as well. Thanks!

I love Noeo, but I can’t give a recommendation for that age because I’ve always used the Level 2 books to accomodate my oldest.  I haven’t used the lower level.  My younger son does listen to the level 2 in and like it, but it isn’t targeted to his age.

At age 6/7, my science-obsessed son loved to pick random books out of the library.  He especially liked the “Let’s Read and Find Out Science” series because they were easy enough for him to read on his own.

I have a science-obsessed child. We don’t do a formal science curricullum. We look things up and get books/movies on subects of interest when we can. He also has an old encyclopedia set that he loves!

For the younger years, my youngers LOVED 106 DOC.  6 years later, he still talks about things he learned and how much fun he had with it.  We added many science videos, other books etc. so it took us about 2 yeaers to go through.  We are about to revisit it with my 1st grader and 4th grader.  My 4th grader remembers following along with her older brother years ago, and cannot wait to start again.

I really like AIG. I haven’t ever used anything else though. For us, it’s just the right amount of material, has plenty of hands on stuff you can do along with it, is at the right level, easy to dig further into, and has a great Biblical perspective. I love that it’s so comprehensive. My oldest is in 8th grade and is using it for the last time this year. My 5 and 6 year old are doing the physical science portion. I feel like it’s a great fit for everybody and I am not science inclined so it’s great for me.

I am also using 106 days of creation for me 7 year old. It is a lot of the same topics we went through w/MFW last year but still very nice.

We did Noeo for 2 years with my older kids. It worked for us to a certain point. The Biology ll was a little dry (the Osborn Encyclopedia was not their favorite). I’ll probably  modify it when I do it again w/my younger kids.

Right now we are doing Chemistry from Guest Hollow and we love it (6th and 8th grader). Much cheaper than Noeo also. I love her Website for both Science and History.

By the way, 106 days was the last structured science I did when he (my current 7th grader) was younger.  After that, we did lots of living books, student led experiments, nature study, etc.  Now, he is using AIG and LOVING it as well.  But I think most of AIG would be over his head when he was younger.

We are loving AIG this year.  It’s very open and go and my kids really enjoy it.  There is a seperate lesson for grades K & 1st, but I usually just read the regular lesson to all of them.   We started 106 Days last year, but didn’t finish it.  My plan is to do some of the 106 activities and notebook pages along with readings from AIG.  I think I’m going to go through the animal section of 106 Days when we finish the AIG animals book.

Holly, is there any particular reason you didn’t finish 106 Days?

Not to steal this post but next year I will have a 6dd doing year 1, a 4ds just taggin along and a 1dd. Will 106 days be good for them? Will it take up the whole year?

We didn’t finish because I had morning sickness half the year and a newborn baby the other half.  😉

Curious with AIG if you use just the book or do you also use the teacher supplement/guide?

I use the supplement as well as the book.  It contains answers to the lesson questions as well as a CD with printable worksheets and quizzes.  Some worksheets we’ve skipped, but there are some really good ones that have them draw pictures or label diagrams of what they’ve learned.  Sometimes we do the quizzes aloud for review and other times I have them do it on their own.   I also use the guide fairly often when I’m not sure of the answers to the questions.  Embarassed  If you are strong on science and not interested in adding worksheets, you might not need it.

Another big LOVE for 106 Days!  I am using this curr. with my 2nd child.  My oldest went through it in 1st-2nd grades, and my son now is doing the same.  He is in 2nd grade now.  Sometimes we miss a day of science due to other activities, and some lessons that have us reading a Burgess books take longer than recommended.  Both my children have enjoyed it, and my teacher’s guide is well worn.

My oldest has been doing Apologia for the last year and a half through our co-op, and I am looking at using AIG next year for both of them.  I will use 106 Days again with my littlest in two years, and I may combine all 3 of my kids at that point.  It is a great intro to all of science, and it is not overwhelming.  Your 4 y/o may even want to jump in on some of the activities.
