Scheduling/School Year

While working on some new copywork assignments for my children, I realized that I have 21 weeks left in this school year. I can’t believe it’s more than half-way over!

There have been several resources that I did not schedule at the beginning of the year when I was planning for this year. It’s not that I didn’t want to schedule them; I just wasn’t aware of these resources until lately (i.e. Updated Gen.-Deut./Ancient Egypt, English For The Thoughtful Child, vol. 1). Also, I have been a bit too lax in following my scheduled 3x/week of 106 Days. I also added some poems and scriptures to this school year. It will be time to begin a new school year before I have finished these resources.

How does that work with the CM Organizer? I am under the impression that I can’t begin a new school year until I’ve finished all the scheduled resources in the current one.

Do I need to go back and edit my resources? Or should I delete them all together and reschedule them? Both of those options seem like a lot of work. Embarassed

If any of you, particularly Sonya or Doug, have a way to get me out of my pickle, I’d appreciate it!

    Grateful, as usual,

    Lindsey

No pickle at all, Lindsey. All your scheduled resources just continue on so you can finish up at your own pace.

The CM Organizer asks for your school year start date only so it knows what dates to include in a Report when you ask for “this school year.” It does not re-set anything on that date; just uses it as a guide for a Report shortcut.

So no worries, your Organizer will keep humming along as usual, regardless of what day it is.

    Sonya,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly!  Kiss

My concern wasn’t that the Organizer wouldn’t continue to run. My concern is that my school year is going to last longer than one year because of those recently added resources. I had hoped to finish up this school year at the beginning of August so we can start our next one in September. Does that make sense?

I think I’ve always had a few resources that bridge into the next “school year.” I know it’s hard, but try not to get caught up in thinking that you have to have a particular resource done by a particular date. Yes, we can plan, but try to remain flexible and focus on the learning that is happening. In a way, those carry-over resources help us reinforce a lifetime of learning with no artificial deadlines.

Whenever I have carry-over resources, I don’t reschedule them or anything. I just keep using them. If it helps any, think of it as you already have a lot of your First Term figured out. Wink

(Oh, that’s right! — Your post just reminded me — if your child were in a classroom school, there would most likely be leftover chapters in several subjects that would simply be skipped because the scheduled “year” was over. End of learning. Move on to the next book in the fall to stay on schedule. Remember all those textbooks that we never finished? But I digress . . .)

    Thanks, Sonya!

So, will this school year ever really end if I continue those unfinished resources and also schedule new ones? Is there a way I can end the school year and begin a new one for the report’s sake? You’ve put my mind at ease about the “scheduled year”, but I also want my reports to be accurate date-wise. Texas is very relaxed toward homeschoolers, but I still want to have proof of what we accomplished in 180 days (the length of the Texas school year). I also want to be able to begin our next 180 days when the current 180 days is over. Does that make sense?

Thank you for pointing out that I already have much of our Term 1 for next year scheduled! You always have a way of making me see the glass half-full. Wink And yes, I remember quite well all those text books I never saw the end of…even if the end looked really interesting.

I think I understand your question. Let me take a stab at it, and you can tell me if I’m way off base. Here’s how I set it up for our records.

My school year goes from Sept 1 to Aug 31, so I have Sept 1 entered as our School Year start date. I check off whatever we do each day, then any time I can run a report for any dates. So if I want to see what we did during our school year in 2008-09, I run a report for those dates: Sept 1, 2008 to Aug 31, 2009. If I want to see what we’ve done so far for this school year, I run a report for Sept 1, 2009 to Today’s date.

Does that answer your question? Or are you asking about moving your School Year’s start date to a different date in the Organizer?

I think that answers my question. I hadn’t thought about the fact that I can enter a start date and an end date when running the report. Our school year also begins September 1st. So, even if some of our resources run over into the next school year, I can still run a report from September 1, 2009-August 1, 2010. Am I finally understanding?

I’m not sure about the “finally” part, but yes, you can run a report for any dates you want. Smile
