Hi!  I am new to HS and CM.  My son just turned 6 and completed public school kindergarten.  I am very interested in SCM’s curriculm guide.  As for scheduling the History and Bible and Geography…if I intend to use Gen thru Deut…does that count as one blocked time?  Or am I missing something?

Thank you…I love this site already!  My son has autism…but is recovering nicely.  I need a good plan in place before beginning the school year…as it is what he will need for smooth transition.

    Thank you!

    Heather,

Welcome to homeschooling and CM. My best advice is to go slowly and not try to incorporate everything all at once. Remember, short lessons that stop BEFORE the child loses attention and that the arts/nature study are vital.

If you are using the SCM modules and the guide, then yes. Monday and Tuesday would be Bible, Wednesday would be geography, and Thursday and Friday would be History.

That’s the way a couple of the handbooks are set up, Christie. But just to keep things interesting, with the Genesis through Deuteronomy module, the handbook is currently set up a little differently from the others. Undecided With Genesis through Deuteronomy, term 1 is Bible History, term 2 is Ancient Egypt history and geography, term 3 is Bible History and geography.

But either way, yes, Heather, it would be considered one block of time per day for History/Bible/Geography.

I’m using this module now with my autistic daughter. She seems to be enjoying it. And I know exactly what you mean when you say that a solid plan will help make the transition smoother. Smile

    Oh thank you Christie!

Just for clarification…if I purchase the Genesis thru Deut book (following the SCM modules)…in the sample pages she mentions using it 4 days a week to complete in one school year…which i am not that worried about…but think I def need a bit of a guide this first year.

Does that book break it down that way?  I love the idea of that schedule!!  It seems I would use that book for history and Bible…and then the map drills for geography?  I am still so new…I am probably over complicating.

We are starting this summer by introducing lots of books (and simple what do you remember/like from the story), Bible time, going out into the garden, and journaling something afterwards.  I also am trying to have him read a bit.  I also have a 4 year old daughter insisting on learning to read.  I am just gathering the BOB books (she loves them…hoping they aren’t “twaddle”…haha…because she is really enjoying sitting in my lap and sounding out all of the sounds.  It’s great fun!!  I was going to do Heart of Dakota…seems like a very simplified incorporation of CM, but feel like God is leading me to trust Him that I can HS without a “boxed” curriculum.  I am still in prayer.  I feel like SCM is a GOD SEND!!!!

Just out of curiosity…how do you do the art/music?

    Thank you so much!!

    Heather
