Ok, need advice, please bear with me!  I was reading up on Penny Garnder’s website (http://www.pennygardner.com/bible.html) where she states that bible should be read to children in “episodes.”  She gives a list of bible stories in both the Old and New Testament (although NT stops at 2 Corinithians).  Anyway, I just finished reading Catherine Levinson’s A Charlotte Mason Education, where there are several sample schedules of a CM day (that she actually used).  Both sources recommend alternating Old Testament and New Testament on a daily basis (OT on Monday, NT on Tuesday, etc).

I wanted to know if anyone else is doing this and if so, how is it working out?  I was thinking of alternating it on a weekly basis rather than daily, and incorporating it with Psalms and Proverbs (OT week 1 with Psalms on Wednesday, NT week 2 with Proverbs on Wednesday).  We don’t follow bible chronologically with history so that is not really an issue; I just wanted to know if my thoughts on how to “do” bible sound like a good idea.

    Thanks!  Angie A.

    Hi Angie,

We used Penny Gardner’s listing our first year of school, alternating  Old and New Testament reading.  Last year we used SCM’s Genesis thru Deuteronomy and Ancient Egypt as a guide.  Since we were reading the Old Testament almost daily, we switched to using Penny Gardner’s New Testament episodes for our family Bible time in the morning.  My 8-yr-old daily reads a psalm & proverb chapter during his morning time with the Lord.

I use the Penny Gardner’s list of suggested stories in the scriptures too.  I admit that last year we just worked on one book of scriptures – and I ended up doing it seperately with my kids as I could read more with the 6yo than with the 3 (now 4) yo….

I have considered doing 1 book of scriptures during family devotion, and the other seperately with each child as a start towards them eventually doing private scripture study when they are older…    Haven’t decided yet though as that is adding more reading on instead of alternating each day…

I think how it’s done varies from family to family. Being a Messianic Jewish family, we follow the traditional “portions” or parashah which separate the Books of Moses into weekly portions to read, finishing the Torah (pentateuch) in one year. Along with that is a reading from the Prophets and for us, a New Covenant reading that also co-ordinates. Plus, our weekly study expands on the portions into other Scriptures.

Practically worked out,  I read every morning from the ‘portion’ from the Torah, then usually either Wed. or Thurs., I read from the Prophets and then the New Covenant portions (there’s always more than one) on Friday and/or Sat. and go through the study, too. My children read something from the Tanakh (OT), something from the NC, a Proverb and a Psalm daily, too. My son follows along with the portion while my dd just opens and reads.

So find a pattern that produces the best fruit for your family and a schedule in which you are confident. I teach my children the importance of having both as a balance daily in your study and walk.

Angie – I have been toying with this question for awhile now, in prep for starting 1st grade in the fall.  I just wanted to say I LOVE the idea you had of switching Psalms/Proverbs on Wed.  I had originally been thinking M-OT T-NT – W-Psalms TH-Proverbs FRI – Character study/devotional/Bible study (whatever I have that I want to go through).  But now I’m thinking about your alternating Wed. idea too….hmmm…
