If your kids are close in age and you are doing read alouds, do you keep going or re-read them when the younger one is “of age”?  My youngest listens in most of the time.  What do you do?

My boys are close in age. Last year when my oldest was 7 and the other one was 5, I let the younger one listen for a while. When he got wiggly I would let him leave. He would stay a good while just not long enough to finish most books. Only some. Now they are 8 and just turned 6. The 6 yr old’s attention span has increased a lot. This school year we are doing read alouds together. Even though some of the stuff might be difficult for a new 6 to understand. He seems to enjoy it. The books we read last year, I am debating on whether to read them again. My son who was 7 so enjoyed them last yr. So I might introduce them again towards the end of the school year. That way both will be ready to listen to them again! My oldest one likes to listen and re-read books over anyways. So I think maybe you can read them now. Let the younger listen as much as possible. Then re-introduce them several months from now. I don’t think it hurts to repeat books! You get to learn something you might not have learned the first time!

    Hope this makes sense!

It does.  My youngest (4.5) is a wiggle worm.  She comes in and out.  She does want to do “school” with her sister, though, so it’s hard.  I thought a separate box would be easier, but I keep shooing my little away; not what I envisioned my homeschool experience to be with them.  My oldest will be 7 in January and she loves read aloud time.  I thought I could continue the literature, Bible, math, and a couple History story books and Language Arts from Queens until my youngest is ready for a Module.  They both love to get their nature notebooks and go outside.  We’ve read Outdoor Secrets and enjoyed it tremendously, so I think we will re-read that and do the companion study in the Spring or fall also.  I would rather do a History Module together as a family.  I’m thinking out loud here, but I think since the 6 year cycle is slower anyway, we could do Module 5 together in the fall.  Ancients flopped, so we are going to go start with early modern.  They both are very interested in that time period, so I think we’ll start after Module 5 is finished.

    Thanks for listening.

My 4dd listened in on my 7dds lit last year and is doing the same this year.  I plan on always keeping them together as my 5dd is increasing her ability to sit and listen and comprehends much better than my oldest did at that age, from listening in so much in all subjects I believe.  We are planning to add to our family however and I am excited to start lit over again, maybe with my eldest doing the reading, maybe with the lit being bedtime stories for the family, maybe something totally different.  I plan on tackling that when I have another 4 year old!  My suggestion is to do what works best for your family being especially careful not to frustrate or stifle the wiggle worm!

I’ve thought about this too as I have a 6 yo, 4.5yo, and 3yo.  My 4.5 yo listens in and loves everything I read to my 6yo, but my 3 yo is hit or miss on whether he sits with us.  I plan on just picking new literature each year for now, but there are some that I will probably repeat for my 3 yo in a few years or let my oldest read to him.

You’re right.  I can always have key books for her to read to herself later or me re-read them during some snuggle time or big sis read out loud to her to practice her skills as an orator.  Smile
