Registration and grade level

Does anyone else have a hard time with grade levels versus simply stating your child’s age on different registration papers (like umbrella school, VBS, Sunday school, extracurricular activities, etc.) Our dd is 8 (will turn 9 at the end of Sept.) and we were advised to go ahead and register her as a Kindgergartener when she was 4 (almost 5). So now we have a child that registered as a 3rd grader last year, but really is still functioning at 3rd grade level now and I must make the decision of stating (for registration purposes only) whether she will be “retained” or “promoted”-as the form states. I know for paperwork it’s not a huge issue, but in her mind being in 3rd grade again is a negative thing. Any words of wisdom?

I have just said my dd is whatever grade she would be in by our P.S. cut off dates if I need to say a grade level for anything.  She works at different “levels” in different areas at home, but we use the P.S. grade levels for anyone asking/needing to know.

If you went by your P.S. cut off dates, what would grade would she be in?  Is that why you registered her as a K when she was almost 5?  If not, then maybe you could just tell her you are going to start going by the dates others normally go by for P.S. (or for whatever standard you’d like to use)……when you say a grade level, and maybe explain how grade levels don’t mean as much as just working to your potential whatever that may be.  (I know it needs to be worded differently to whatever would make the most sense to your dd if you are really needing to change her grade level on papers.)

I hope that helps a little.  Maybe someone who has done something similar before will be able to give a good example of how it worked out for them.

I think that if you are referring to what grade level you should classify her as for things like VBS or Sunday School, I would put her where you feel most comfortable with her maturity level and ability to fit in.  I don’t necessarily think that reading level always equals maturity.  So, even though she may only be reading at a third grade level, but she is easily able to fit in with fourth graders at a fun VBS, go ahead and put her in forth.  On the other hand, if you think she would feel more comfortable/have a better fit with the third graders because of her maturity level, then by all means put her there.  You are in a great place as a parent because you are able to discern for your daughter what is right in each situation–you don’t have to pick a grade and stick with it.
