Our family enjoys reading book series. We are currently reading the Little House series for our family read-aloud. For literature next year, we will read Narnia. DS6 has been reading the first 19 of The Boxcar Children on his own. Are there any other series you can recommend? We don’t mind having several read-alouds going at once. My children are 5.5 and almost 7.
Blessings,
Lindsey
Rachel WhiteParticipantIf you don’t have a problem with fairy tales and old children’s stories of years way past, I highly recommend the Olivia B. Miller My Book House series for children (and interested adults!) up till the 12 vol. of the 30’s. This is probably not the series you were looking for, but we just love these; these and another called Book Trails I received from my grandmother, hers being from the 20’s. Awesome!!
The reason I say not past the 30’s is because the illustrations start to change and PC started to set in. Here’s an example of illustrations. I’ve found great prices on the set of 12, and individually, from the 30’s at Ebay and Amazon and Alibris.
Other than that, at the top of my head, at the age yours were, we read through Uncle Wiggly and the Burgess Series’. They also have liked, and continue to like, the Childhood of Famous Americans as they help spark that historical interest and give a familiarity for important names; those mine read on their own though (I’m thinking your 7 yr. old)I need to think about others I read aloud at that age, I know there was more. Maybe, I’ll check back in when my brain checks back in!
A great palce for old series recommendations is Valerie’s Living Books.

nerakrParticipantYour children may be a little young yet, but you could try Henry Huggins by Beverly Cleary.
dmccall3ParticipantRachel, Any idea where to get My Book House series and Book Trails for an affordable price? What a treasure you have there!
EsbyMemberIt’s been mentioned recently in another thread, but the All-of-a-Kind Family series is great.
csmammaParticipantLindsey, in addition to those that you mentioned, our family has enjoyed (or rather treasured) “The Farm Mystery Series” by the Castleberry’s. The characters in the series are Christian homeschoolers, which make it all the more relatable to our dc.

swtonscrappnParticipantWe are about to start the Mitford Series by Jan Karon. I just read the first one, and I love the activity and the characters.
HopeMemberWe are finishing up the My Father’s Dragon trilogy and have absolutely loved it. Dh actually has been reading these to the boys because he’s been enjoying it too.
suzukimomParticipantThe Redwall series is great! Kind of a knighthood theme… but the characters are Mice (and the bad guys are Rats..) – I have only read the 1st one, but it was great!
baileymomMemberI second All-of-a-Kind Family! Also, Sarah Plain and Tall. My 10 yr old DD is enjoying the Mandie series right now (? twaddle).
…I’ve been searching high and low for a series for my 8 yr old DS…I’ll have to check out My Father’s Dragon, thanks Hope!

LindseyDParticipantGreat suggestions! Thank you!
baileymom, I totally forgot about Sarah, Plain and Tall. Thanks for the reminder!
csmamma, the Farm Mystery Series also sounds like something we would enjoy. It is our dream to one day live on our own farm, so it’s right up our alley!
Thanks everyone!
greenebaltsParticipantOur 7 year old dd really likes the Grandma’s Attic series. I also just finished reading Kildee House by Rutherford Montgomery aloud to 5 & 7 year old and it was real hit! mmg
thepinkballerinaParticipantOh wow thanks for posting all these great book suggestions! I’ve just requested the Grandma’s Attic series! My daughter age 8 loved the All-of-a-Kind series. And we reading Elsie Dinsmore as our read-a-loud. Loving it too!
