Has anyone used an online program called Reading Eggs? I hadn’t heard of it before, but I received an email today through TOS offering a 4-week free trial. It says it goes up to age 13, and I was considering it for my 13yo struggling learner. However, the subscription price might be more than I want to shell out….

Any input would be appreciated. Here is a link to their website: http://www.readingeggs.com/homeschool.

We are using it now, for ages 6 and 9.  The 6-yr-old uses the Reading Egg portion and the 9-yr-old using the older kid version.  They both like it quite a bit.  For the older kids you have an avatar and you can win/earn things for him….clothes, apartment stuff, etc.  They BEG to play all the time and I have to set time limits.  It has really helped the 6-yr-old and for the 9, it’s more of a ‘he’s actually reading’ type thing.  My 12-yr-olds watch their brothers and have asked for an account of their own but they read very well and I don’t want to pay for them just to play!  Try the free trial to see if your son likes it.

Did you know that Reading Eggs is discouted 25% through Homeschool Buyers Coop? Check it out!  Makes the yearly subscription $56 instead of $75 🙂

I have not used it but it is one of those things I look at all the time… I worry about buying it and not using it. I need to sign up for the free trial, I guess.

Well, I decided to go ahead with the 4-week free trial. After all, it doesn’t require you to give them your credit card or anything like that.

I have to say, so far, my son mostly just likes to “walk around” in the mall and his “apartment,” but it is new to him. He did actually read one book and take a quiz (didn’t pass, but I think he rushed through it to see if he would earn “eggs” to spend at the mall!), so I have to give him credit for getting that far with it!

The early chapter book he read, however, was…..well, twaddle. I’m not really surprised because a lot of these online reading websites are chock full of twaddle. I’m not sure we would pay for this unless my son really dives in and improves his comprehension, vocabulary, etc.
