So do you actually order the apologia kit (or just collect the supplies for the apologia labs) and the microchem kit? If you buy these sets and then use this with a second child is there a way to repurchase just the consumable items. This would make the cost more tolerable knowing I have 5 kids coming along behind my 10th grader.

I don’t purchase the Apologia kit.  I do what labs I can, not purchasing any extra “official” stuff–several of them just use household items.  Our main lab is the Microchem.  Actually, almost the entire kit is re-usable for several children–you only need to buy a new lab book.  I purchased only a new lab book this past year, did all the labs a second time, and still have plenty of chemicals for #3 in a few years.  You MIGHT need to top up a few for five repetitions through, but most of the chemicals are only $3 a bottle to buy again, and most of them you should be OK on for several repetitions.  Many of our bottles are still over half full!  They give you plenty.  That does make the $$ easier to bear!

Interesting thread- I am appreciating all of this. We have a local lady in our church who has a degree in Biology and she has offered to teach a co-op of sorts to my dd, my sisters dd and a friends dd. We have Rainbow Science, actually 2 sets between the 3 families and so will be using that for the base. This will be for 8th/9th grade science. If I didn’t already have Rainbow I don’t think I would buy it, it is just so expensive. I will let you know how it goes as we get into the year 🙂 Having said that, I have been looking at NOEO science, the Physics III level. Has anyone looked at it? We did the Chem III course in my dd gr. 6 year and I quite liked it. Thorough but not overwhelming> I wish they would put out a high school level course. There is Biology 101 and Chemistry 101. those courses are pretty good. DVD based, with a printable TG and study questions. Our distance school is actually accepting Biology 101 as a creditable course for Biology 11. My son has to add on a few experiments to satisfy his instructor but other than that she says it is a good, basic Bio 11 course. Most suitable for those without a strong science leaning. I am curious as to whether anyone here has tried it or not. It is very faith based and so far my son is enjoying it.
