  • It seems that I read a post about a good supplement for teaching fractions? Does anyone know?

Or if you want to share your favorite program for teaching fractions, I am all ears! Thanks!

If I ever felt the need to supplement, I would use the Key to Fractions books.

I’m not sure about the thread you mentioned, so can’t help you there.

I like the way Math-U-See teaches fractions w/ the fraction overlays – this is the one my girls have enjoyed the most.  However, we have also been successful with cuisinaire rods and the fractions book that is specificly for them.

In addition to those programs, I’ve also made a point to talk about having 1 of 2 or 1/2, 3 of 5 or 3/5, 2 of 7, etc. “of something” in conversation so that it reinforces what the kiddos are learning. This fits in with the way fractions are taught in both of the above mentione programs.  I don’t try and manufacture a place to use it, though.  In our family there are 7 of us under one roof, so there is ample opportunity to add fraction based information in everyday conversation.

Cooking has been a huge thing for us and using fractions.  Also, my dh needs to know and understand them for his job so I have him to fall back on.  Sorry I can’t share him!  LOL

Are you thinking of Life of Fred: Fractions?  We haven’t started it yet, but it looks good and is supposed to be pretty fun for the kids.  We use MUS, and my daughter will be done with Epsilon (Fractions) in a week or two and then we’ll do Fred (some do Fred on Fridays, etc—it’s supplement, not usually considered stand alone).  HTH:)  Gina

We are using the Math Mammoth blue series for this. They are inexpensive and dd10 loves the way it teaches.

Thank you all! I think LIfe of Fred was what I was thinking about. I would like to try that one over the summer after my main math curriculum is finished. For now, Heahter’s recommendation for the fraction workbook fits my budget, so I ordered the first one. It looks good!

    Thanks again!
