I am new to Charlotte Mason and I am so excited about this method of teaching and living. It is such a natural, intrinsic approach to education. Since I have a seven year age span from my youngest to my oldest the combined approach of SCM is a blessing!
I have a few questions. Please respond.
1. What manipulatives are necessary for RightStart E (grade 4)? I plan to get the A standard kit for my Kindergartener but I don’t know what additional items to buy for my 4th grader.
2. How does SCM approach exams?
3. Is there a guide on the number of pages per book or subject we should cover per day/week?
For your RightStart kit – are you doing the 2nd Edition for Level A? (I probably would if I had the opportunity…)
If so, you would get the Manipulatives Kit – which has everything (I’m not sure if a couple of manipulatives are being retired or not…) And then just the Transition book, Lesson book and Worksheets for level E for your older child (knowing that you wouldn’t use them for your younger child as the 2 editions are not compatible.)
If you are doing Level A 1st edition, then You’d have to check – as Level E is the highest level, it would likely use most of the higer level type manipulatives – and you have a child in the youngest level you would need most of the lower level type manipulatives – it would probably STILL be best to buy the new complete manipulatives kit…. but I could help you go through and figure out what exactly you would need….
btw – the company is really good at helping you figure out what you need….
Exams are approached with open ended questions…. in the younger years they are done orally.
So for instance…
1) Tell me the story of the White Ship OR About the death of Wat Tyler (each from Our Island Story – it was one chapter….)
2) Tell me what you know about Jupiter OR Saturn
3) Tell me what was the favourite thing you saw on a nature walk this term
4) Describe your favoutite Picture from Picture Study this term
All of this done as a wonderful opportunity for your child to show what they know, not what they don’t know… (which is why I’ll give a couple of choices…)
Is there a guide on the number of pages per book or subject we should cover per day/week?
There is a great resource here that will teach exactly how to do that!! It is the Planning Your CM Education book and DVD. It helps you figure out what and when to teach, how often, and how much.
Have you seen the Free Curriculum Guide from here? It’s awesome and a great place to start. If you click on each subject on the guide, it will give grade by grade suggestions for everything. Everything we have used from SCM has been a wonderful product and has enriched our schooling experience.
Welcome to the forum! In reference to your 3rd question, I would recommend SCM’s Planning your CM education. This resource is so great for planning out your year and how many days a week each subject requires. It takes you from the big picture (what you will teach all 12 years) down to the daily schedule. You can download a sample for more explanation. HTH!
What did your 4th grader use for math last year? Since level E (besides geometry level G) is the last book in RS, you might look at what you will be using after RS and go with that instead of doing the transition lessons. If you do RS, I’d call the company to ask them what you’d need. They have been very helpful to me in the past.
I second the All Day CM Seminar from this website. A friend let me borrow it, and it really gave me a good how-to. It helped me to feel like, “OK, I can do this!” as far as how to teach each subject. I haven’t read SCM’s Planning Your CM Education but have heard others rave about it. Sometimes I start looking in other directions, but I always come back to this website, it is so helpful and I just love the CM philosophy as well.
I found both the All Day CM Seminar and Planning Your CM Education to be helpful and well worth the money. I don’t think I could have had such a successful year without those resources.
