  • Hi,

I first want to say how blessed I am by this group!  I don’t post much but have received a wealth of information reading the posts.

I have noticed there are a lot of you from Texas.

My family is going on a 5 week vacation to Texas (we live in Southern California) starting next week and we were wondering if there are any favorite places to visit or places we just can’t miss.  We for sure are going to the Houston area to visit Voddie Baucham’s church-Grace Family Baptist Church.  Have any of you ever gone to his church?

Thank you in advance for your time!

    Blessings,

    Danielle

    Danielle,

No, I’ve never been to that church.  I grew up in Houston and loved it.  I’m not sure what the ages of your children are, but there are a ton of things to do there.  The Natural Science Museum was my favorite growing up.  Moody Gardens in Galveston is unbelievable, a must see.  While you’re down there, the Historic Strand has amazing homes with a lot of history (guided tours are available).  There obviously NASA.  When I was in school, we had a field trip there once a year.  Surprisingly, NASA is really visitor-friendly.  I am going down Labor-Day Weekend to Houston to visit my Dad.  We’ll be there at the same time!  If you want to know more specifics, please pm me.

    Blessings,

    Cindie

    Hi Cindie,

Thank you so much for your quick reply!  My kids are ages 16, 12, 11 & 8.  You gave us a lot of really fun ideas.  Everyone keeps telling us how great Texas is but that the weather (especially in Houston) and the bugs are tough.  We are used to California weather so I am hoping we can handle it.Cool  The church is fairly new-I think it was started in 2006 and is a Family-Integrated Church.  Voddie Baucham wrote the book Family Driven Faith which my husband and I loved.

Thanks again for your great wisdom!

    Blessings, Danielle

You can’t come to Texas and not visit the Panhandle…Amarillo, Palo Duro Canyon, Cadillac Ranch. It’s all wide open spaces here, and it’s starting to cool down a bit. We’re the first part of Texas that does cool down in the late summer. It’s beautiful–the sunsets, prairies, horses and cattle everywhere. I guess I’m a little partial since I live here!

    Well Danielle,

I don’t live in TX but I was born there and have family that live in the Dallas area and friends in Austin. And my DH and I love VODDIE. WE have heard/seen him speak twice and have heard several of his sermons on tape. What a great thing to do on your vacation. We plan to go to a conference he, Paul Washer, and Doug Philips are speaking at in December…I can’t wait.

Of course you have to see the ALAMO, and the riverwalk in San Antonio…I haven’t seen either of these but I want to.

    Blessings,

Like Shelly said, here in San Antonio there’s the Alamo, the Riverwalk and also Sea World is lots of fun (but being from So Cal you probably knew that alreadySmile).  If you come to San Antonio and want to see a bunch of vintage military airplanes as well as the SR71 Blackbird we can get you onto Lackland AF base for a little personal tour, that would be fun!  The Natural Bridge Caverns just north of here are amazing, perfect on hot summer days because they’re so cool inside and the tours are excellently done: http://www.naturalbridgecaverns.com/

Austin is hands-down my favorite city in Texas and has lots of fun places to go like the Austin Nature and Science Center http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/ansc/exhibits.htm .  Pioneer Farm in Austin is a great place to spend the day, step back in time and enjoy learning how the pioneers in Texas survived all those years ago, plus they do lots of special events and reenactments, just check their website:  http://www.pioneerfarms.org/

Hope that gives you some more options to consider, happy planning!

    Rachel,

Ok now I want to visit TX on vacation. None of my adventures to TX have been for sightseeing..just to visit family and none of them were up for sightseeing..just family reunions and such. BUT hearing about San Antonio and Austin makes me really want to visit..and the perk of getting to meet your lovely family. Too bad it isn’t in the budget this year to take a vacation. Maybe next year if your still there. Smile

Hi again!  I just wanted to say thank you for being such wonderful ladies and taking your time to help us with our planning.  I do all the prep and packing and my sweet hubbie does all the itinerary.  I am usually a control freak about things-I definitely like a plan.  We have been doing these big trips every fall for the past 8 years just exploring our beautiful country and it was a wonderful growing experience for me to give up control and let him be in charge of the trip.  Even if he does decide the night before at midnight what we are doing the next day! Surprised  God did a work in me!

We are very excited to check out Texas!

Rachel, thank you so much for all your great links and the offer for that tour-I showed it to my hubbie and we just may take you up on that offer.  How far in advance do we need to let you know?  My 12 year old ds was so excited!

Shelly, isn’t Voddie wonderful!  We feel like we can’t get enough of him-he truly knows God’s Word.  My dh was reading Ever-Loving Truth, my 16 year old dd had just finished What He Must Be….If He Wants To Marry My Daughter, and I had just finished Family Driven Faith when we found out he was the main speaker at our annual homeschool convention this past July. We were so blessed to be able to hear him in person.  I pray you are filled when you get to see him in December.

Thank you all again!  You are such blessings!

    In Him,

    Danielle

Thanks for all the fun ideas to visit!!!!  We’re heading to San Antonio in September for a week or so (we’re in west TX so it’s not too far for us) and plan on hitting all the sites.  Any great restaurants we need to try?

I live at Fort Hood, which is between Waco & Austin, so if anyone is traveling thru north-south or vice-versa on I-35 I would be happy to give you a tour of the Army base.  My husband has a desk job, so that wouldn’t be much fun, but we have 2 awesome museums with tons of vehicles.  (a few that you can climb on) And a great lake/outdoor rec area.

Danielle, a few days notice would be great so we can clear some time to take you on base for a bit.  Just let me know, it would be fun to meet you and your family!  As for restaurants, crazy4boys, we don’t really eat out much so I’m at a total loss on that one, but I’d love to meet you and your family if you have the time and want a little military airplane tour.  Just let me know!

p.s. Shelly, your comment made me feel so special!  I’m certain we’ll meet someday soon!

For those of you interested in a must-do San Antonio restaurant:  http://www.lafogata.com is the website of our favorite San Antonio eating place.  Amazingly fresh food, great atmostphere with lots of outside seating, tropical plants, etc.

I’m jotting down all these great ideas for San Antonio, ladies. Hopefully when we are there to do the 2-day conference the end of October, I’ll be able to visit some of these places. Thanks!
