In my other post about trying to decide on math, several of you mentioned CLE Sunrise.  I have looked it over and it looks very good.  However, my concern is the amount of daily workbook pages he will have to do.  I read some reviews online and most said it took about 45 min.  That would really make my ds moan and groan and complain.  For those who have used it, how much time does it normally take and about how many daily pages does your dc do?  My ds will be in 3rd grade but in looking at the material I am thinking about starting mid-way through 2nd grade.  I’m still unsure what to do.  I’d love any additional feedback on this.  Thanks so much.

    Hi momof3,

I have used CLE for math from 4th grade through my now 9th grader, and we really love it. Now, that doesn’t mean it isn’t tough at times! I think it is very thorough, teaches good fundamental math habits, and uses a spiral approach, where the students are learning something new each lesson but also reviewing and practicing previous material. It is open-and-go, which I love, and very amenable to self-teaching. Also, it is VERy affordable! Now, as far as the amount of time, I think a lesson can take anywhere between 30 minutes and an hour, depending on the student and the material. I rarely have my kids do all the review problems, but simply x out the ones they can skip. They love this, as visually it makes it seem like the workload has been reduced, but they still have plenty of practice. We also like the 2 quizzes and test format for each light unit, as it gives them a sense of accomplishment to see they are doing well. I highly recommend most CLE subjects, even though they are not technically CM for all these reasons. Hope this info helps!

I think that was me going on and on about CLE in your other post.  🙂  When we began CLE, I had my dd go back and do all of 2nd grade over again (as I mentioned before, we were coming from MM, and she had retained nothing).  We are now finishing up grade three.  I would say a lesson rarely takes her more than 30 minutes, and sometimes it doesn’t take that long.  We don’t always do the flash cards that are scheduled.  If I think she knows them like the back of her hand, we skip, and we may pull them out once in a great while just to make sure she has retained the facts.  She does do her entire lesson every time, as she is the type whose confidence gets a huge boost when she can soar through a lot of problems.  If we ever do hit a lesson that is taking longer or is more difficult (not sure this has ever happened with dd but has happened with ds7), we just split the lesson up by either leaving the last page, which is usually review, for the next day or doing the entire workbook lesson and leaving the speed drill and flash cards for the next day.  When ds is having a really rough day (although not diagnosed, we deal with some autism spectrum-type issues with him), I have him pull out his counting book and fill in a few lines.  This keeps math doable and enjoyable for all of us.  Hope that helps!

We just began using cle math and we all love it!! The kids are feeling more confident in their math skills and they are zooming through these workbooks! They really like how it is broken down into small parts in the lesson, so it isnt boring. It does not take my 2nd grader anymore than 20 min, if not less, to finish her lesson. My son is a dawdler and his attention is kept well. He prob takes 45-60 min, sometimes MUCH quicker! I think the key is to place them correctly. If they are struggling, you might want to move them to a lower level. I have been hsing since the beginning and my oldest is in 7th gr., and I have to say that this is *the fit* for our home, finally!! I have never found a curriculum that has drill so built in, yet is so independent. My children actually – finally – have their facts down!! 🙂

Thank you all so much. I think I’m going to order 2nd grade and see how he does and hopefully move into 3rd before school is out this year. I really appreciate all the feedback!
