    Hello!

I have a question on this part of our history/geography.  Are we to make a map of ancient Israel?  or the modern?  We are having a little trouble finding a good relief map and I want to double check my (now) confused thinking.

    Thank you!

We just did our map of Israel. We did current Isreal because it is the current world geography that I want them to be familiar with. Also the mapdrill is of the current middle east. We found it difficult to make the shape of Isreal because it is so skinny. I’m thinking maybe we should have just made a big base, and then “scored” an outline and then painted it in later…

When we made our salt dough map of Israel, we made it as large as we could. Then we used it as we studied the land divided between the tribes and the various Judges. We made the terrain the same as present day (more or less; mainly I wanted the children to see that Jerusalem was on a mountain, so they would understand why the Scriptures always talked about going “up” to the city, even when it was southward.) but didn’t label anything other than the Dead Sea and the Sea of Galilee. That way we could paint in each tribe’s allotment when we read about it.

Ours wasn’t as detailed as this relief map, but this picture might be helpful to you.
