I have recently been looking at a chart that I got from another CM site that shows how many books and pages your kids should be reading per year, term, week……on down to per day,  according to their age.  So, my boy in year two, according to this chart, should be only narrating back to me roughly 4 pages per book per day?  I have been having him listen to me read a whole chapter of the Burgess Animal Book and then give me a summary narration of the whole chapter which is normally a few pages more than this………should I be reading just 4 pages at a time?  How important is this?  The link to the chart is below.  Thanks!

Thats a great chart thanks for sharing.  I find that it depends on my kid.  Some of my kids really need this and it’s important they only read a bit a day or they don’t comprehend.  I have other kids who can read and totally get it and narrate it with ease.  So I am a bit in the middle on how to handle it.  Also, up to 6th grade I do separate and schedule books.  7-8th we talk about the books and how many they have and work on a number per day together.  9th and up they know how many books they have to read and then it’s up to them to finish by the end of the school year or they finish in the summer (which is not fun)

I have learned to base this off each child.  Not helpful but just our ways.. 🙂

Also, the amount of words on a page of one book could vary greatly from the amount of words on a page of another book.  Not to make things more complicated….but something to consider. 🙂

yes that’s another great point.  The younger kids might have a small picture typically on the 1st page of a chapter so really it’s a 1/2 page or less.  While an older child might have a large map or commentary on a page to look at.
