Question about Potty Training Seats

We’re getting ready to potty train our daughter and we purchased one of those attachable seats that they sit on – on the big toilet. Then all you have to do is lift it up to sit on the regular toilet. Unfortunately, we have one of the toilets that has the longer seat…not the standard size round toilet seat. It’s more oblong. The potty training seat does not fit.

Did any of you have the oblong size toilet when you were potty training your little one? Did you find an attachment that worked? Did you use the separate potty seats? Or did you use the regular toilet? And if so, did you have any trouble with them being able to balance and not fall in????

We’ve used a separate little training potty with both of ours.  I like this when we are getting started because we can take it from room to room with us making it faster to get there when they are just learning.  Both of ours eventually started using the “big potty” on their own eventually, without any seat attachments at all.

We’ve never used a separate little potty.  We have used a seat on the regular toilet for some of the kids, others didn’t care.  Our toilets never had oddly shaped seats though, so I’m no help with that.  We did have one or two wet bottoms using the regular toilet seat with no small insert, but just laughed it off and the children remembered pretty quickly to pay attention when they’re sitting there.

If you have a little speck of a toddler that you’re trying to train, then I really like the separate potty – once they start to feel it they can run in and get started by themselves if they’re coordinated enough to get their pants down.  But if the child is walking well and climbing well, then some of mine have liked the cushy ones to get started we have the oblong toilets too – Here is the cushy one – you should be able to find one at a consignment store for next to nothing – my girls have also gone without – I think it depends on the child and what makes it more “fun” for them.

Thanks for all the input. Our little girl really wants to sit on the big potty seat. Thanks Rebekahy for giving me the link so I could see the one you used. They have similar ones at Wal-Mart but they don’t look quite the same shape. After we tried the lift up lid one we bought and it didn’t fit, I was afraid none of the others would fit. I’m going to look again at Wal-Mart just to double check and see if maybe I overlooked one like what you gave the link for.

We may go ahead and get a potty seat too as some of you made a good point that by having one it makes it easy if they need to go quickly.
