I am looking for advice on printing. I feel like I go through ink cartridges way too fast & my printer takes forever (HP Officejet–??laser jet I think??) What do you use or what have people found to be the most cost effective & time efficient way to meet the copying/printing needs of homeschooling?

An Hp officejet Pro can take a CIS. Yours may also.  A CIS is a continuous Inking System.  You just refill it with the color ink that goes low. This way you don’t just have to replace the whole cartridge when all the red ink is use up. I have 2 printers hooked up to my computer. I have a HP officejet Pro L7580 and a HP laser jet 5. The Laserjet 5 is only black ink. I use this when I don’t want to print in color. It also doesn’t have a scanner/printer/copier so it serves its purpose when I want to copy tons of stuff on the net. I have never replaced the ink cartridge because the cartridge in it is so big. It will do more than 25,000 peices of paper before it runs out. So, for pennies I can make copies with that.  If you get one of these and your office jet runs out of ink you will still have a backup plan. 🙂  Also, the ink cartridge if you ever need one LOL… is only $25. new or you can refill them. At least that was what I was told. I will buy a new one instead of refilling though. Like I said, I have never had to buy a new one. The computer tech told me my printer or computer will probably go before I ever need to replace it.  I do want the same 2 printers hooked up to my next computer though.

My HP office I use mainly for color copies for homeschooling and other color projects. You can probably get one of these on line for $40. The CIS cost $38. plus shipping on E-bay. For under $100 you could have a setup. These last a long time.  Both of mine were school printers. So, they were both use really well.

So, you could just by the CIS on E-bay and look how to set it up on Utube or you could get a backup copier to do your black ink copying.  Make sure you can get the CIS for your computer though they go by your model number. If you have anymore questions let me know.  🙂

I hope someone else chimes in with better ideas too.. 🙂

                                        Blessings! and good luck!

We have an older HP Laserjet IV+ (I think…) that we got for free on freecycle.  They were designed to be used in an office, and will do a LOT of printing before running out of toner.  It is older, and if it isn’t working you need to look in the manual (available online, thank goodness) to figure out what is wrong… (just various lights flashing) – but it is cheap to print on.  We use that for black and white.  I haven’t had to buy a cartridge yet, so I’m not sure how much one costs.  (we did look it up, but I forgot.)

We also have a HP Color Laserjet CP1215 for colour printing.  The toner is expensive – but we can go a good year before having to replace them with heavy use (when we didn’t have the other one.)

We also have an Epson colour inkjet printer…. the ink cartridges add up too – now the nozzles are plugged so it is useless as a printer.  (I manually cleaned them out and it printed ok for a day – then was blocked again, and I can’t be bothered to try again.)  I only keep it because it is also our scanner.  sigh.

for cost concerns, I can highly recommend a CISS. I had an HP inkjet for which the cartridges could not be refilled, so I got remanufactured ones for half the price of new, but I was still spending way more than I cared to. I ended up buying a new printer and a CISS an in a year and a half have almost saved enough just in what I was paying for ink to have payed for both the printer and the CISS.

I ended up going with a Brother printer, just because the CISS hook-up was so much simpler with the the ink cartridges on the front, but you may be able to find a CISS system for your existing printer. I got my CISS from Print Pay Less on Amazon and just last month, for the first time since May 2011, had to refill any ink, just from what came with it when I bought it.
