As a homeschool mom of seven I do a LOT of copying, printing, and scanning.  I’m currently using an older machine (it’s an HP OfficeJet G85, if that means anything) and ink is expensive!  So, do I replace my old machine and if so, with what?

    Thanks for your help!

I waited for a sale at Staples, took in my old printer and got a $50 rebate.  I paid $130 for a $350 machine.  I use this all. the. time. for everything and LOVE it.  It copies, scans, prints, faxes and has wifi capabilities so I could print from a device if I had one.  I have had it almost 2 years, made over 17,000 copies, and it is still working wonderfully.  I cannot not tell you how much money I have saved in ink, either.  The black cartridge runs about $38 new and does 2000 copies.  The 3 individual color cartridges run about $26 and do about 500 copies.  You replace them one at a time so it isn’t as expensive.

I have almost the exact same printer and I love mine too! I have had it for over 2 years and we’ve had no problems at all — except that the initial set-up was a little tricky even for my techy hubby. It was a great purchase for us. They go on sale really frequently.

oh, that sounds great!  I spend between $65 and $80 for a black & color cartridge set, but they don’t seem to last very long.  🙁  I know I don’t get anything near 17,000 copies…wow!!

I had tons of problems with my Epson…tons. Wouldn’t recommend it. They had bad customer service to boot. I finally replaced it (after about 1 year) with a Canon MX 420. It is a printer, copier, scanner, fax. Much better, but those ink jets go through ink fast. My favorite printer is my Brother HL2240 inkjet. It only prints black and white, but the high-yield toner lasts forever and the ink doesn’t smear.

if you’re looking for something on the less expensive side, I’ve had a Canon Pixma MP280 for over a year. I bought it at Walmart for about $38. It prints, scans, and copies in black & white or color. I have used it for over a year and made a ton of copies. I taught a course for a homeschool program last year and in one sitting I made over 500 copies with no problem whatsoever. At this price, I could buy a new one in a year or two and it would still be worth it. I’ve replaced both cartridges twice, once in the middle of the year and again this week.

On a side note, I buy refurbished cartridges from http://www.inkjetsuperstore.com. I’ve been doing that for a few years for all of our printers and haven’t had any problems.

I have a Brother DP-7040 laer printer. It is the best printer I have ever owned. I buy generic replacement cartridges when needed. The replacement cartridges are 19.95 (compared to brothers at $69). I can get about 3000 pages before having to replace. I love this printer. The only downfall is that it does not print in color. Fortunately, 95% of all my printing is only black and white anyway. If I need to print in color, I have an HP printer that I use. Now that printer runs through the ink, so I hardly ever use it.

Mom of 7 here too. I have a Brother MFC-7340, a black and white laser printer/scanner/copier. I adore it. The ink vs. toner cost is amazing. Just for comparison, the laser prints about 1500 sheets on one toner cartridge. One cartridge costs $42.00. That is 2 cents a page. To print that many pages with the inkjet we had would take 7.5 cartridges, costing $135.00 for the same 1500 pages!!!! Ouch. We’ve had it since 2009 and it’s still going strong. I’ve learned we can live without color printing too, black and white is enough.

I’m going printer shopping today.  In the last few years, I’ve killed an Epson (lasted two years) a Lexmark (only lasted a year and a half!) and an HP OfficeJet (have had it almost three but it is driving me NUTS–keeps telling me I don’t have cartridges in, and I DO!)  I really just need black and white, I never buy color ink, but I do need both printing and copying.  Sigh.  Why do printers have to be so awful???  Computers we do pretty well with, but printers cause me endless frustration.

We have a Brother Laser.  I buy toner from Amazon and it’s super cheap!  We bought it about 7 years ago and it’s still going strong!

My husband just ordered us a new printer/scanner/copier in one. Granted, the toner is expensive, but I believe one toner cartridge lasts up to 1,000 pages. This is what we have (which means nothing to me…my hubby takes care of all our technology needs, so if he says it’s what we need, it’s what we get Wink)

It’s the HP LaserJet Pro 100 WiFi Color Multifunction printer 600×600 dpi, 17 ppm black, 4 ppm color, Network Ready, Wireless, Copy, Scan.

I think if you’ll search that, you’ll find what we’ve got, which is a great machine!
