I am looking ahead to next year and looking for great idea’s to add to do with my preschooler (will be 3yrs). I am looking for things I can make or put together not really, unless you LOVE the item, to buy. I also want things my older children can do with him while I am with my 1st grader.
Here are things I have so far, memory games, ABC’s, #’s, colors, shapes, cutting & pasting, coloring.. so I’m looking for more than those basics.
Thanks in advance for the help
Misty
nerakrParticipantI haven’t tried this yet, since my preschooler isn’t quite 2 and I haven’t gotten around to making it yet! But a former coworker of mine told me about this, that she used when she taught at a preschool (different job than the one I had with her): paint some inexpensive wooden spring-type clothespins in different colors. Store them in a large container (such as a bulk coffee can or ice cream bucket) that you would also use for the game. (Or if you don’t want to paint, buy the colored plastic version). The object is to have the child select/sort by color. He can also practice fine motor by opening and closing them. You or the older children can tell him to have the alligator bite the can or plate or whatever. Just be sure he knows not to use it on the baby.
Of course, there’s always the standby-play dough.

CandaceCParticipantHave you seen the Preschool Activities in a Bag ideas??
You can google their books…you can purchase the book and put together all the baggies yourself…or you can look through sample pages to get ideas of bags to make yourself. These are fun and my kids have all enjoyed them.
Also, I have listed lots of ideas here on my blog. I use them in our workboxes, but you could do any of them on their own without workboxes. 🙂

Here is a long list of links and early elementary ideas, some of which would still work with preschoolers.

CindySParticipantIf you have popsicle sticks (fat ones are the best), lay 5 or 6 side by side and draw a simple colorful picture on them, like an apple, tree, caterpillar, etc. You have an instant puzzle. For older preschoolers you can flip them over and draw another picture on the back so they have to figure out which side goes with which puzzle.
nerakrParticipantThought of something else. If you sew or know someone who does, save the spools. Paint them and have him string them onto sturdy string or cord using a plastic needle. Incorporate math by having him put a certain number on or by making a pattern (two yellow, one green or two big, one little, etc.)
Crystal WagnerParticipantWe love the book Workjobs for Parents. http://www.amazon.com/Workjobs-Activity-Centered-Childhood-Addison-Wesley-innovative/dp/0201043114/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1242436869&sr=8-1
It has lots of ideas of hands-on learning. We started using them when dd was 2 and she still plays with a lot of them. One that we have really enjoyed is saving jars and lids of all shapes and sizes (plastic work better than glass, but with a 3 year old you could use glass). They fist can practice figuring out which lid goes with which jar and practice screwing them on. Later we added pom poms and marbles for them to scoop into the jars with measuring spoons or tongs and pour into other pans.
I second Preschool Activities in a Bag. My 4.5 year old still uses some of them. These would be great for the older kids to play with the 3 year old.
Puzzles are also great. The dollar store had a bunch of the 25 piece ones.
Plus, if you google file folder games, there are a ton for preschool.
missceegeeParticipantSome things mine have enjoyed –
Playdoh (I found a website that had different homemade recipes for each month.) – http://www.hubbardscupboard.org/index.html
Rice box – for pouring and scooping, running cars in, etc.
Stacking Pegs by Lauri – something I bought, but even my 5 yo loves
Puzzles – mine like wooden and Lauri best
Playing in a sink full of water – keep towels handy!
plastic animals to set up like a zoo – we have lots and use our legos or blocks w/ them
Tupperware and pots and pans
We tried the Preschool Activities in a bag and liked a few of them.
