I have a favor to ask of you: would you please lift my family up in prayer? We are going through some rough financial times, and we just found out that our health insurance will be going up $300 a month. (It already costs $850 a month, and it will be going up to $1150!) This is after a pay cut 5 years ago and another one right after Christmas. My husband’s job is very specialized and does not pay well (he is topped out in his field because he’s been at the same company for 20 years), so we’re in a prediciment of searching for a new job or finding a spare $300. I am struggling with how to pay for our very expensive homeschool group that we are part of (money is due in July and I don’t know how I’m going to do it!) and whether or not I should try to get a job that offers benefits. My husband already teaches drums on the side, and I babysit part time. Please pray for peace in our home as we research and make some life changing decisions over the next month. (We need to decide whether or not we will accept the insurance increase by July 1.)
Thank you, in advance, for your time and prayers–Faith 🙂
Hi, my heart goes out to you – these are really difficult times for so many. We will add you to our prayer list and pray for peace and answers to your dilemma. Would it be possible for you to give up the homeschool group for a while, I think it is a shame when the groups are expensive, it makes it so difficult sometimes to make the memberships. I understand the feeling of belonging with a group, but could you perhaps take a time out from the group until things look a little better – it may help a little. I guess the best advice apart from this is keep the faith and pray, pray, pray for a solution. I do hope that there may be an answer that would mean you would not have to take on a part time job – overdoing adds to the stress in a home, and then the children can sense it. God is so good, and there will be an answer. In the meantime, God bless and prayers are being said for your situation.
Faith, I too will be praying for you and your husband as you walk through this together. It may be a season of giving up excess things (such as the homeschool group). It sounds like you have a lot on your plate already! We will trust that God will do what He wants to do through this financial trial. May the God of peace flood your heart with His peacefulness 😀
Oh Faith, I am so sorry to hear of this increase but I do believe that nothing happens without reason. God has a plan for you and your family..to show himself mighty and His grace to be sufficient for your every need.
I will be lifting you up in prayer. Are there other options for insurance..I’ve heard of Samaritan’s Purse or others that are Christian providers where families pay into each others costs. I haven’t looked into them yet. But plan to if and when God ever changes my DH’s job situation and brings him home to farm and run a family business.
Faith, I will be praying for you and for God’s peace to dwell in your heart. I am praying that He will show himself in a mighty way and provide the guidence and assurance you want/need.
I will join the other ladies in prayer for you and your family.
I know how hard this must be. I’m not saying I would recommend this unless the Lord leads your dh and makes it very clear, but we’ve had to do without insurance throughout different seasons of our life. God was always faithful to carry us through and protect us. We’ve also had our dc on a state funded insurance while dh and I had only a basic major medical ins. I know the Lord will guide you as you make these decisions.
Also, we too have had to cut out homeschool groups over the past year because of the cost. It was hard at first to quit them after years of being a part of it, but I have to say, I’ve enjoyed this year much more with our dc at home – no running around, class prep and assignments, and not to mention the financial pressure of paying for the classes. Yes, dc have missed some of their friends but we’ve made sure to still get together with them, outside of the expensive classes. I could go on & on but just want to let you know that if you have to take time off of these classes, your children will not miss out. God sees and knows every season of your life and promises to provide for your family every step of the way.
Your support and love touched me to the point of tears! Thank you for your overwhelming responses to my request. I have looked into several of your suggestions, and I will be bringing them to my husband for discussion and prayer. You have come through for me just like I knew you would!
I want to let you know about Christian Healthcare Ministries here: text to link
This is what we’ll be doing next year after our military service is over (and our medical benefits are over, too). It’s sooooo affordable and you’re giving to a common purse for other christians, rather than filling the coffers of big insurance corporations. It has been highly recommended to us and we find it to be utterly biblical (Galatians 6:2), we’re excited to become part of this and I wanted to pass the information along to you. I hope you are having a great week!
Is there a website for these groups? We also pay 900 a month and it’s got a large deductable in front of it. I would love to learn more, really the only time I use insurance is for deliveries and EM’s. Times have been tough for us also, DH self-employed.
I would love to hear what other idea’s you all have for cutting costs?
I needed to add, that though times have been tough, the Lord has always provided in ways that at the time didn’t seem like much or like it was the Lords way, but in the end it was his way of helping before it happened. Like we sold our old house before the huge housing issue and before we even thought the winter would be tough, but now we can look back and go.. hey, God just was one step ahead of us. Cause there is no way we could have afforded that house this past winter. God is good!
Just thought I’d tell you something to give you more “faith”
You can go to http://www.chministries.org/ to find out more about their services, we are pretty excited about it! Ultimately, we can trust God to provide for us, rather than putting our trust in a human insurance company, thanks for reminding us who is the real Insurer of our lives!
Okay, here’s a question about the Christian ministries. Is it insurance? Would I have a card to present to a doctor? I’m hesitant to switch to a program like this only because I don’t want it to be difficult to see a doctor if we need to. I’m just a little confused as to how it works. I’ve read about it, but I am wondering if anyone has first hand experience with it.
These services are not insurance, although they basically fulfill the same function: being able to afford medical care when it’s needed. I think of it as an imaginative alternative to mainstream insurance. 😀
Although we don’t have personal experience with these ministries (yet) I understand that as long as the physician is approved by the AMA and the treatment is within the guidelines of the program you shouldn’t have any difficulty seeing a doctor. I’m hoping there might be someone here on SCM who knows more, too.
I would recommend Samartians Ministires due to their reputation in the medical community. You can learn more about them here…http://www.samaritanministries.org/
I know quite a few people who use SM and I am sure they would be happy to help you with any info. Also, call them. They were extremely helpful when we called them. We are about to start up with them.
I know some details about the program but I do not want to make a mistake and give incorrect information. Call them and they will explain everything to you. They will also send you a DVD that will explain it all also.
