In this case, the closing quotation mark was left off to signify that Sherlock Holmes continued talking after the sentence given. There is a note in the corresponding Using Language Well lesson (student book) that says:
“There is no closing quotation mark because Holmes continues to talk; the exercise stops before you can see the rest of what he said. Read the book to find out the rest.”
Hopefully, the student will be intrigued! 🙂
