I will have a 6 yr old and a 4 year old next year and was thinking of doing pond and stream with them. We live out in the country, garden, butcher chickens, and visit their cousins and grandparents on a farm with milk cows, sheep, chickens. They are outside all summer playing helping with chores and haying making applesauce .. When I looked at outdoor secrets it seemed like they already had experience with a lot of it which is why I thought of pond and stream.
However we don’t live near a pond. Can you do this with only going to a pond occasionally?
Do you have another science idea? We do do nature study but they have really enjoyed my homemade animals around the world unit this year so I wanted to do some more science readings. We also read the Burgess books for fun.
I like the looks of Dr Wile’s new historically based science but thought the kids were still a bit young? Thoughts?
Karen SmithModeratorThe Pond and Stream Companion was written so that you do not have to have access to a pond, stream, or any other body of water to do the study.
With the ages of your children, I would wait at least a few years before doing Dr. Wile’s elementary series of books. It is also perfectly acceptable to use only living books and nature study for science for the elementary years.
