Phonics practice choice

  • Hi all,

My ds (6) will be doing 1st grade in the fall.  We are currently finishing up MFW K and are on about the 5th/6th lesson in the Elson Readers Primer (using the teacher’s guide).  I am not going forward with MFW.  I do plan to continue the Elson Readers.  The guides have you point out something phonics related with each lesson, however I would like to supplement with something that will give him extra phonics practice.  Sounding out words is not our strong suit.  I am leaning towards either Explode the Code or Phonics Practice Simplified.  Any thoughts on these or something else will be appreciated.

I am a big fan of the Phonics Museum by Veritas Press.  Beautiful fine art used to illustrate, solid phonics rules and progression, very helpful letter puzzle pices to help aid sounding out and blending. If you are not a “kit” fan, then I would say look into The Ordinary Parent’s Guide to Teaching Reading by Jessie Wise. It gives you no fuss phonics instruction and helps you use magnetic sletters to teach sound blending etc. I have not enjoyed our try at Exthe Cd with either of my children and don’t think it the bee’s knees but many have found it worked for them. hope you find what works for you and your child!
