On another thread, I asked about spelling programs other than AAS and was reminded of Phonetic Zoo. For those of  you who’ve used it:

Can the tests be done orally, on the keyboard, or by using letter tiles/magnets?

One of the things ds hated about AAS was writing the words. He didn’t like AAS’s letter tiles either, but we have our own that he’s been known to play with occasionally.

I implement PZ methods with one of my children, but I don’t own it. I vary the way he demonstrates proof of learning. Oral, handwritten, etc. counts for me, especially when it translates into correct spelling in othe written activities. I also utilize some prepared dictation to help him learn in a variety of ways. My thoughts are that if he is exposed to a variety of methods aimed at spelling success, he will be more apt to learn to spell. None of them truly stick out as “the” way for him to learn at this point, but he is making progress.

    🙂
