I’ve been looking at some things on the internet.  I want to work with phonics some more with my DDs.  I was planning to get the Pathway Readers to help them continue their reading.  Should I get the workbooks to go along with them to help with phonics or should I get All About Spelling to supplement with instead?  There is so much out there that I just don’t know what to get or do!!

    Hi Pangit,

We use Alpha-Phonics for reading instruction, Pathway Readers for building fluency and AAS for phonics & spelling. It is a good combo. I do not recommend the Pathway workbooks personally as they seem more like busy work to me.

    Hi,

I am using AAS for remedial spelling with an older child, regular spelling for a middle child and phonics help for a younger child — all at different levels.  We like the program alot and find it to be very effective, however, it requires more of my time than a workbook approach.  You didn’t mention how many children you are home educating so I don’t know how much time you have but that may be  a factor in your decision as well.

We are using the Pathway Readers.  I bought the workbooks not knowing if I would use them or not but they were so cheap I wanted to check them out.  Each story has 3-4 pages of work but we read the books 3 days per week so that would be 9-12 workbook pages just for reading!  What I do is circle or point an arrow to the few things per pages I want her to do.  Sometimes the kids are suppsed to write complete sentences but since we are not doing formal spelling or grammer yet, I have her do the questions orally instead of having her write sentences.  I just help her make complete sentences.  They only take 5-10 minutes and it is helpful when I am working with her sister.  Plus, I will be able to use the same books for three or four kids by having them do so few questions per page.  You wouldn’t be missing anything if you skipped them but they might be helpful if a child is still struggling with phonics rules, if there are other children and you need a little filler, or if they enjoy a little workbook time.
