At the request of my ds, I’d like to do a simple study on owls with him. I have some ideas but need a bit of structure so I was thinking of a lapbook (he likes to cut and paste) and I have some Jim Arnosky books and a living book, I’m sure.
I’m looking for a suggestion for a simple unit study for his age. I’ve looked at In the Hands of a Child and it unit study says it’s geared for 11-13 yo..I could modify it, but I’d like something closer to his age/grade level.
I also found one on pinterest, but would still like a recommendation from you all.
You might want to look into some of the nature centers around you. The one near me is having an “Owl Moon Walk” at the end of February, because there will be a full moon, making it easier to see the owls. 🙂
Several years ago, we read a wonderful picture book called “Adopted by an Owl: The True Story of Jackson the Owl” by Robbyn Smith van Frankenhuyzen.
After reading it, we wanted to learn more about Jackson and found out that the authors have lots of information on the web about him and other owls as well.
I shared all the links in a blog post that you can read here:
Did you check it out on currclick? The Hands of a Child lapbook here says all ages. And the sample looks good too..sometimes what I do is take out a few of the things to be done to make it less work.
Dissecting owl pellets is a great activity, too. Pellet.com has some great prices. And it’s not wet or stinky dissection. Basically, tearing apart a dry pellet to discover the skeletal remains of what it ate.

I would also read aloud *Owls in the Family* which contains lots of good information in it in an accessible story forman – I believe it is a true story. He will enjoy it, I’m sure.
