I’m looking for more books for my 12yo ds to read in his free time. He loves outdoor adventure types and does not like fantasy. Some of his fav’s so far: My side of the Mountain trilogy, Sign of the Beaver, Where the Red Fern Grows, Rascal, Hatchet, Mountain Born, Little Britches, Old Yeller, the Call of the Wild, Island of the Blue Dolphins, Incident at Hawks Hill, etc. Any other suggestions for this age would be great! TIA
Alicia HartParticipantSugar Creek Gang series may work – maybe too young, not sure.
What about G.A. Henty books?
Vision Forum is a GREAT source for boy type adventure books as well.
HTH!
Laura.boraParticipantAll the ones I would have suggested, he has read already! But you gave me a few good ideas!
curlywhirlyParticipantTreasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson
Two Years Before The Mast by Richard Henry Dana
Jack London who wrote Call of the Wild was a prolific writer. Not all of his work is suitable for children, but if you did a careful screening there should be lots more from him that would be interesting.
Scott O’Dell wrote Island of the Blue Dolphin, and he has many other children’s books, such as Zia, and Sing Down the Moon.
The Old Man and the Sea by By Ernest Hemingway
Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss
Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder
Johnny Tremain by Esther Hoskins Forbes
The Bronze Bow by Elizabeth George Speare
Karen SmithModeratorHas he read any books by Jim Kjelgaard? Kjelgaard wrote many outdoor adventure books. Many are out of print but are available at libraries. Look for Big Red, Irish Red, Outlaw Red, Wild Trek, A Nose for Trouble, Trailing Trouble, Desert Dog, Lion Hound, Rebel Siege, Buckskin Brigade, and many others.
Arthur Ransome’s Swallows and Amazons series of books are favorites here, too.
Wings2flyParticipantHow about Sam Campbell? There is a site with some to read free online. I purchased some at libraryanded.com. Here are the titles I have: How’s Inky, Moose Country, The Seven Secrets of Somewhere Lake, Sweet Sue’s Adventure. This last one is the only one I have read so far as it was one written for a younger audience than the others.
csmammaParticipantThank you for sharing! The books by Kjelgaard look perfect. I’ll check out the others as well. Many blessings and thanks, Heather
Wings2flyParticipantI also see Kildee House on my bookshelf. It is Newbery but we have not read it yet. Ernest T Seton has many including Bio. of a Grizzly Bear, free kindle we read and enjoyed…also Lives of the Hunted.
Katrina in AKParticipantWe’ve recently enjoyed Owls in the Family by Farley Mowat.
